Track and share your training!

Dailymile makes it easy to keep track of your workouts. Map your routes and share with a community of active people.

Is running like weight training in that you should give your legs a day off in between runs?
Or is daily conditioning better?

rest them as you first start.... or run SLOWER than usual as a recovery run. It will help your runs get faster. I only run 4 days a week and alot of begining traing programs have that too. But a bike ride or swin on an off day is good for cardio and gives the legs some rest.....but then again what do I know, I push too hard all the time hahah. It's a balance you find as you start

It depends on your goals and purpose for running. To train to get faster and be competitive running every other day is usually recommended with cross training to prevent injury while still building cardio endurance. The idea of needing extensive base miles, particularly to train for shorter distances (5k or 10k), has been largely debunked. There is a good book about this, Run Less, Run Faster.

For those running more for the sake of running and who are less concerned about times and races, the more often you can run the better. They will still have easier days with with fewer miles and/or slower pace. A popular book with this philosophy is Born to Run.

    Great!
I'll definitely check the book out.
I want to run for fun, but tend to be pretty competitive and don't necessarily want to do a 5k unless I'm going to perform real well!
