This is where some mountain bike riders play at Ft Yargo. I ran past it yesterday. Pic does not show how bad it really is but Maggie did not dare to go down.

All of my races in the last almost 35 years have been rewarding but I have had a few which I consider very special. In 1980 I did a marathon where the first half and last half were only a minute di... read more

Jay, I talked to him before the award ceremony. In my 2 dozen years racing around Atlanta I never saw him at a race but I have seen his name on race results here and there. I think he is a multi decade runner like myself and probably excels at road races. To be so close to him is actually a good thing. However, you are correct. That man will get a second place award -- if he ever shows up at a trail race again. Woof.

Thanks Takis & Bill. I normally do not carry a cell phone but with an electrician coming sometime today I had it in a backpack. Durn phone rang and I was 2.5 miles away from my car and he would be at the house in an hour. I got off the trail and hit the road with the Montrails. Hey, these things are great on pavement. Short run but the house stuff is more important.

Jeff, have you done the meat grinder up in the mountains ? It has been years since I did that 17 miler. Hot and drought last time. Yargo is about 25 miles from me. It offers some hills, rocks, roots,. I think the shortest way around the lake is 7 miles. The half there is 1 big loop.

Alexandra & Jay. it gets better. Second place dude gave me a big speech how he was gonna whip me good next time. He had no idea I had been ill and I did not tell him. A few months later we met at a race. Heh heh, he must have forgotten what he told me.

Amazing story. Have you thought of writing your autobiography? What I wonder is, why would someone with a strong limp start running, and how did it feel when he did?

Alexandra, When that guy started running he had to warm up the ankle for about 15 minutes.which would click click. The hop skip run became a real run in the months that followed.. The only reason the poor soul began to train was to do a 5 mile race and that was a big personal challenge. The one time only race turned into a thousand.

That's a really happy ending (well, continuation). So sad that it's often the other way - people do ONE race or long walk etc and then it's all over.

Alexandra, you are right. We ran downhill, then up and down a lot and then up the hill to the finish. That is where I got close to the 65-69 winner.Apparently he struggled with the last hill and I was going steady and easy. Another mile and I would have got him by 30 seconds. Legs are not tired from an easy 8 miles. Feb 25 we have a half marathon on a trail. Maybe if I push it the legs will know the next day.

Thanks Marty, Cris, & Gil. Todays 2 nd. is just fine as this was race # 1 of 7 in the series. I won the series in 2010 & 2011. Chances are a lot of runners cannot make all 7 races anyway. That narrows the field to a few.

Results are posted. I was 12 seconds behind first in my age group. For that to happen and me not see him means he was dying at the end and I had a steady pace. Cya at the next race buddy. Now I know who you are and what you look like. LOL
