Eek! First run since my 40-miler! The following issues have kept me from running: recovery from 40, final exam period, an impromptu 1000-mile roadtrip, relationship stress. I have done little stren... read more

Hell yes I ran 40 miles!
This was an early-40th-birthday fun run I organized for myself and my friends, also as a fundraiser for a number of charities.

Breakaway Thursday out & back 3.58 mi 00:36 09:59 pace
SO very sluggish this evening! Is it the emotional and stressful week I have had? Is it the extreme taper? Is it riding my bike a huge 2.5 miles from home to Breakaway?

Not so much a "run" as a "jog while dragging my dog along." I guess she and I have a hatred of running in the heat in common...although it was a gorgeous 65 today :-/

Our local running store organized a 2.62 fun run to raise money for The One Fund (to help victims of the Boston Marathon bombing). I'd estimate at least 300 people came out.

Wow. That is awesome. There was so many organized runs like this locally this week, but due to family obligations I was unable to join any. Very bummed. I did donate, but it's not the same as running with everyone. Great Job!

As a runner of marathons, a former Bostonian, someone with two close friends running Boston today, but foremost as a human being, I am so sad and confused and angry about the attack in Boston today.

Herb Parsons Lake 27.5 mi 06:10 13:27 pace
This went so-so. The first two 9-mile laps were pretty much right on target, but I was pretty whooped for the 3rd lap. I even cut off a couple of miles in one section.
This was my last long run be... read more-

To paraphrase Game of Thrones: SUMMER IS COMING. It was warm and somewhat humid this evening..not my favorite. But I still felt pretty good. Ran without a watch, as is now my habit on short runs.

If the goal of the recovery run is to get used to running through fatigue, then this run fit the bill. I wasn't too terribly sore after yesterday, but definitely sluggish.

So, how far are you running tomorrow? These back to backs show you how much pain you can stand and still keep going. :-) You got this!

Nice Job:
Don't be. The way I look at it, I'd rather have a poor training run, and figure out what is needed for the big run/race. No worries. It's all good for you!

Breakaway Thursdays 4 mile 4.22 mi 00:40 09:28 pace
Pretty good. I felt sort of stiff and not great since I haven't run since Sunday.

So I've been meaning to ask, what is 'Breakaway Thursdays'? Just curious!

Breakaway is our local running shop. They have group runs on Wednesday & Thursday and their two locations. Sometimes upwards of 50-60 people! And free beer after :)

Yeah, the running community here is pretty tight. We Breakaway fans are a bit cult-like in our devotion to the store, its owner, and...its beer. There is a smaller & less-passionate group who are Fleet Feet folks. And then there are the Hashers...another thing entirely! But we overlap.

Shelby Farms Greenline 11 mi 02:00 10:54 pace
Pouring down rain all morning and I had so little motivation. I had to find an easy, flat place to run so I wouldn't wimp out.
Trying to work my way up to 40!-
Hope so! Over the next couple of weekends I am going out to the trails where I will do the 40 and do 18 and 27 for training runs. And then hope for the best for 40 :) Sage is actually coming from NC to run it with me!

I think your plan is great. I'm doing something similar for my 50 milers in a couple weeks.

I have been talking to Sage a lot about training for ultras. We keep coming back to the benefits of what some people might consider under-training--lower mileage than what many plans might recommend. I know I have been tired going into big races. A generous two-week taper is key! If scheduling allows, doing long runs every 10 days instead of every week.
