I'm still not sure what water running is supposed to "feel like". Finding it's difficult to keep my heart rate up or maintain any semblance of running form.
Having said that, I think today's effort was more effective than yesterday's. I tr... read more
Great work Cory ... glad you figured out something you can do - have you thought of working in some plain old swimming. That will keep your heart rate up!
3 days agoFirst off, a HUGE “thank you” to my running friends! After about 24 hours in the abyss of self-pity, my running friends came to the rescue with emails and comments on dailymile.
Here's my “thank you” list -
Ariana – I haven't visited a doctor an... read more
Cory... I'm so glad you came on and gave us details of what's going on. Some people on here, when they're injured, just disappear and we wonder if we'll ever see them again. I'll be thinking about you and hoping and praying for the best. I know you mentioned resistance training. I assume you're including core work in there? Crunches, planks, push ups? Can your leg handle that kind of thing. I was so glad I continued as much as I could with those kinds of exercises. I think they've helped me
4 days agohelped me come back strong from my lay off. If you didn't see - I got my first 3 miler in yesterday. As an encouragement to you, I don't think it will be long at all for me to be back at my level of fitness and I was off for 9 weeks! I know you're much more in shape than me and I just don't see you losing much in 2 weeks. I do hope it will only be that short of a lay off. Please don't push it - be smart! Lastly, you're a great writer too - enjoyed your synopsis! :) Keep us updated on your progress!
4 days agoGood luck, Cory. I've been there myself (not while in prep for Boston, though.) I know you want to keep your leg strength up, but if you don't continue to see improvement in how your calf feels, you may want to try just swimming instead of water running. You'll at least get a good cardio benefit, and you won't force your calf to do more work than it wants to.
4 days agoIt's official, I'm injured. This is very, very frustrating! My training had been going so well over the past few weeks. It's disappointing to know the gains in fitness will now just be slipping away; unused. The overwhelmingly crazy thing about thi... read more
Oh no! I am so sorry Cory! Rest it up, are you going to see a Doctor?
7 days agoIt's better that you're taking it easy now than really hurting yourself right before the Marathon. Keep you're head up and don't get too down on yourself. I hope that your calf strain gets better soon and you're back on the roads!
5 days agoCORY!!! I just saw this - I'm so sorry!! You can get over this. Just be patient and you'll be back strong in time to get ready for the race. Praying for you!
5 days agoExperienced a running first this morning. Six miles in to this 8-miler my left calf cramped up to the point I was limping ... big time. Ended up stopping. Tried to massage and stretch it out. Realized I was cooling down and just tightening up. Gim... read more
i had my first cramp issue last year...it is not fun. hopefully it won't be a problem for the rest of the week.
8 days agoOh no! That stinks. Do you think you stepped on it funny to cause a cramp? That is so painful. I hope it gets released today!
8 days agoUh oh. By the time I'm writing this post, I hope it's already gone!
8 days agoSorry Cory -- hope you can figure out why it happened and be able to avoid it for the race
8 days agoWicked northwest wind this morning. Seemed I was running NW the entire time on this out-&-back. :-)
Ran the last 7 as a progression. Wanted the last mile to be half marathon pace (6:52). Happily ended up as follows:
748 733 723 712 704 655 649
That is an awesome progression run. nice finish!
10 days agoGreat finish Cory!! Sorry about that wind, I hate the wind!!! Good, solid, run!
10 days agoStrong finish! 6:52 is supposed to be my 1/2 pace (according to McMillian) .. can't hit it though ... last one was a 6:59. Great long run!!!
10 days agoGreat job and in wicked wind!
10 days agoNothing like a tempo run to get your attention. These are always a challenge for me to execute properly. Pleased that this one came together ... not without significant effort though.

12 days agoWow! Great tempo Cory! I agree, it is so hard for me to get them right also. I am either way too fast, or I am too slow by about 10 seconds. You had a fantastic run!!
