Even though my shin is still sore, I thought I could get in a good run... My shin told me differently. To add to my injury.. my left calf cramped up this morning... I figured I could run/jog it out and hopefully the pain/soreness would work itself out:
I ran 2.18 miles in 20:30 and I stopped and walked for .31 miles, then i ran for another .76 miles and decided that was enough for today. This is frustrating... 4 days now, this shin splint has been lingerring... Grrrrr! Sometimes my leg feels great and then other times, It hurts to walk... It does feel better today than yesterday, I hope it is history by tomorrow. My form was off this morning. My feet were slapping the pavement, and i was favoring the left side... all in all, i am glad i got in a run, and things should definitely be ok by this Saturday.... I may consider purchasing a sleeve for my left calf/shin if this soreness continues... Have a great day every1!!! I did get to see the sunrise this morning!

Way to push through...Have you changed shoes recently? I am experiencing some of the exact same- started with shin and moving to calf. I am hoping it is just transition to new shoes??

Troy, we are in the same boat this week. I've got shin splints from last Saturday's Hilly Race and since then I'm off from running. I've already went for 2 massages and my Osteophatic doctor told me yesterday I had shin splints so he did his thing and put 2 bandages on both sides of my left posterior calf. He also told me not even walk, just rest, ice 3 times/day, stretch 3 times/day and continue taking the anti-inflammatory medication. He told me to try running again next Monday, til then I'm resting.

Troy, I hope you feel better soon but you should rest, ice, stretch and take some anti-inflammatory and don't hurry to come back running. Give yourself one week off from running like I'm doing now. Take care. :o)

I feel your pain my friend... Literally! My left shin has been hurting for a while. I try to run through it but then the next day it feels a little worse. I'm thinking of taking a break today to see if tomorrow's run will feel better. Good luck.

Jason- I have not recently bought a new pair.. well a month ago... I have about 200 miles on my Brooks. But I have been increasing my weekly running mileage recently.
Cynara - your problem sounds worse than mine. Hope you feel better. I have a race this saturday and WILL NOT miss it. I honestly think all will be ok by tomorrow.
Anthony - Hope your injury heals. Good Luck to you as well!
I'm off to work now, enjoy the rest of your day!

Try the rest, ice, elevation, stretching technique like everyone says. If you are shit out of luck with that and still want to race, tape that baby up with some Rocktape. It got me through the Chicago & NYC Marathons last fall when I had some minor shin splits. I love the stuff and it's better than other kinesio tapes out there.

That's such a bummer that you are still feeling pain. It sounds like maybe it's the increase in mileage that's buggin the shins? I'd really recommend cross training for day or 2 off since you have the race SAturday. Sounds like you are doing all the right things to treat it! I'll keep my fingers crossed that the pain goes away FAST!!
