Confirmed today--IT band is strained..suggest 6-8 weeks of NO running. Very frustrated and overwhelmed right now. June 17th is my marathon. I have put in a bunch of miles for this marathon...going to do my PT's plan and shoot for the half,,maybe?

Sorry to hear the news. Was it your PT that suggested 6-8 weeks off? If it was a regular doctor you may want to get a second opinion. If ITB doesn't force you to have to stop and you can run through the pain it may be able to be managed.

Ouch. They let me run through my rehab (while I was in PT). I had good luck with the ITB strap, which my PT approved of me using to get me through until they could finish fixing it.

@Angie--Can talk more about the ITB strap? @David-Yes, it was a PT, suggested two full weeks off, then slight walk/jog to determine... a good 6-8 before return to normal if done well.

This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Tec-Athletics-Iliotibial-Compression-Black/dp/B000G34VV0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336564397&sr=8-1

One end has a little "knob" on it and you put that right at your knee where the IT band connects and then tighten the strap and it keeps the ITB from pulling on your knee. It doesn't FIX anything, it just keeps it from making it too painful to run. Not a SOLUTION, but it got me through a marathon.

What is their plan for PT?

I am sorry to hear this, Taylor. Ugh. I had IT band issues when I did my first marathon in 2003 - I wasn't able to run for the three weeks leading up to the marathon. I had accupuncture four times (which I swear by) and then used an ITB strap in the race. I was able to finish without ITB pain, although I had lost some fitness/training time and struggled in general.

Oh Taylor, I am sorry to hear this. Hopefully the band Angie suggested or something similar will help you. I haven't been running near as much as you but boy, I would be crushed if I was told I couldn't run. It becomes such a part of you. I REALLY hope you get better fast. Hugs!
