  4. RUN
    Thursday Long-ish run 17 mi 02:25 08:31 pace

Ran with some friends who are doing the Napa Valley Marathon. 14-pound backpack. Legs felt tired, thus was happy to run with friends who didn't feel like making this a speed workout.

  5. RUN
    14 mi 01:52 07:59 pace

Wednesday night backpack run. First 8 miles slow. Last 6 miles fast(er).

  6. RUN
Tuesdays with Breandan 11.01 mi 01:20 07:14 pace

Ran with my friend Breandan; 11 miles in Central Park. Started off slow (8:04 first mile), ended fast (6:06 last mile). Felt good to run without the backpack and crank out some fast miles at the end.

  7. RUN
Fastish Backback Run Home Fro... 8 mi 00:57 07:10 pace

11.5 pounds in the backpack. Decided to work a little bit on form and turnover, and ended up speeding up a little bit. Not a bad way to end a Monday!

Not bad. Three miles were sub-7, which is pretty rare for me when I wear the backpack. I really cannot wait to ditch that thing!

Why a 16-lb backpack? Aren't marathons tough enough with just your own body weight?

I'm with Matt N. on this one. I'd also be worried about injury, but what do I know--- I broke a treadmill once filling dumbells in a backpack...

Matt, Ryan -- I'm training for the Atacama Crossing. I'll be running 250 km through the Chilean desert, carrying all my provisions in a backpack. The majority of my training runs these days have been with a backpack, including this marathon. Oh the things we do to train.

    2012 Miami Marathon - 16 poun... 26.39 mi 03:35 08:09 pace

This is what a marathon effort looks like when you run with a 16-lb backpack and no taper! This was a very good training run.

All in preparation for the Atacama Crossing....

Rahmin, banish the thought! God help me if I ever gain 16 lbs; I'll be kicked out of the club!

Because running is preferable... 10.03 mi 01:19 07:55 pace

Had to be uptown after work, so I decided to strap on the backpack and get a nice 10-miler in the rain en route.
