Scott Johnsen #dailymission - what ...
Track and share your training!
Dailymile makes it easy to keep track of your workouts. Map your routes and share with a community of active people.
#dailymission - What always keeps happening even though you thought you had it figured out? There are so many things, but I'll go with this one. I've been riding for a little more than 2 years now, and I still have not been able to keep my "easy" rides easy so that my "hard" rides can be harder! You can hit me in the head with a shovel several times, but that doesn't mean it will sink in! :-)

I have the same issues bro, lol :)

I always find it difficult to hold off when the legs say lets go!

I have the same problem with the new bike. I want to ride the bike hard riding, not easy to see what the bike can do.

And what do you think drives you to ride hard all the time? Because you are an ex-marathoner, I know that you're competitive. Is that it, competition? Competing against yourself?

@Robert, very good question. I am VERY competitive with myself, not generally with others. As a kid I played baseball all the time. I played all out all the time to win!! But if someone on my team screwed up, I was the first one to say "don't worry about it". Not so if it was my screw up. As a runner, there were a couple of people I really wanted to beat as is the case with golf. But in both cases, I would prefer a good race/game on my part but a loss to a crappy race/game and a win.

@Robert - (cont.) With cycling, I want to get better. I know that getting better requires recovery as well as hard effort. But on a day to day level, I easily forget that. But even in the century rides, it's mostly about beating my previous best, beating my expectations, etc. I can't think of any cyclists that I want to "beat". I would like to be competitive, but "winning" doesn't really come into play. But no one likes to be dropped. :-)

I think you have one speed, Scott - your very best no matter what!

Thanks Christie! Sometimes my "very best" isn't so hot. :-) But I know we all have those days, right?

I understand completely. Maybe there should be rent-a-coaches that get in front of us and MAKE us take it easy. I'm retired--maybe I should learn to do that and hire myself out!
