But isn't the whole point of this article that tighter muscles perform better than loose ones? (Similar to the Florida State University study I linked to a little while back http://afowl.com/2009/11/24/to-stretch-or-not-to-stretch/ ) In which case, perhaps your resolution should be to do more of a warm-up rather than more stretching. Not that I'd necessarily eliminate all stretching.

I think warmup is a key factor that I'm lacking - especially when I work out at the gym. How much cool down do you give yourself, Jason? I'd really love to find the balance where my muscles aren't too loose, but aren't too tights and ready to snap...

Yeah, I think warmup is important. Part of the reason I dislike shorter runs is I'm only really fully warmed up after a couple of miles. As for cooling down, I probably should do more. I typically walk anywhere from half to a full mile after my runs (to get back to my house), but I don't slow the pace down the last few miles like I should.

My warm up is a walk to the corner (about 2 houses) and cool down is the walk from the corner. I figure if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

The more in shape you get, the longer it will take to warmup. Also, if you are active the rest of the day for work and then you go run, you won't need as much of a warmup. But for us seat-ladened geeks, students, officiers and their ilk... don't skimp on the warmup. The hammies will thank you later.

Very interesting. I think my hams have been waaaaay too tight and that contributed to my disc herniation; I fail the test given in the article on if you need to stretch at all.

Reminds me of how Chris McDouball (Born to Run) says you never hear kids say they need an hour of hot yoga before they can go run.

I think there is no such a risk than too loose muscles. And the more in shape you are, the more you want to speed up and the more likely it is that something snaps if you don´t warm up enough and have a good stretching later.
It´s good to reserve time enough because older you get, the more you need both warming and stretching. Unluckily, we are not getting any younger...:-)
