This graph could also be labeled, "why we are a fat nation." It kind of says everything about how silly the US is when it comes to food subsidies. We could be a whole lot smarter here! http://slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/

I have a book called Food Politics (by Marion Nestle, no relation to the Nestle chocolate company) and there are some astounding stats in it about how the food industry influences health and nutrition.

I taught 4th grade where every single student qualified for subsidized breakfast and lunch and the meals were high fat, processed foods with very little vitamins and nutrients. The school also cut out gym class and students only had 20 min after lunch to run around outside. It was awful. Nutrition and health are not thought to be important in education. Now I'm in nursing and I see people with all sorts of health problems that are completely avoidable with exercise and eating right.

Jennifer - just picking up the baton from your post! Barb - I love Food Politics! It's a bit of a doorstop, but it's a must read. Katy - Ugh! with my kid in elementary school now, it's a bit depressing to see the sad unappetizing things that are sold as food there, and we make so many choices in a tunnel on education, as though physical well-being is somehow divorced from intellectual performance.
