So glad I squeezed this run in after only 3 hours of sleep with sick kid, full day of teaching, writing, before heading out for night in Miami - I was tired well before the run began. But I realized it would make me feel better and it did, especially ... read more

This graph could also be labeled, "why we are a fat nation." It kind of says everything about how silly the US is when it comes to food subsidies. We could be a whole lot smarter here! http://slowfoodusa.org/index.php/campaign/time_for_lunch/

I have a book called Food Politics (by Marion Nestle, no relation to the Nestle chocolate company) and there are some astounding stats in it about how the food industry influences health and nutrition.

I taught 4th grade where every single student qualified for subsidized breakfast and lunch and the meals were high fat, processed foods with very little vitamins and nutrients. The school also cut out gym class and students only had 20 min after lunch to run around outside. It was awful. Nutrition and health are not thought to be important in education. Now I'm in nursing and I see people with all sorts of health problems that are completely avoidable with exercise and eating right.

Jennifer - just picking up the baton from your post! Barb - I love Food Politics! It's a bit of a doorstop, but it's a must read. Katy - Ugh! with my kid in elementary school now, it's a bit depressing to see the sad unappetizing things that are sold as food there, and we make so many choices in a tunnel on education, as though physical well-being is somehow divorced from intellectual performance.

I was feeling a bit stiff yesterday, but the legs feel better today. I'm tempted to run tomorrow afternoon, but I should probably wait until Friday. Hmm.

    injuredMid-morning short run 2.07 mi / 00:22 10:35 pace

Thought everything was going well, had a nice, easy pace going, and I was feeling relaxed. But then an odd tightness/dull pain started up in my thigh. I stopped and stretched, but it kept up. So I walked it on home. Feels like a groin pull, so I th... read more

Did arms and legs this time. I have been pretty cautious, but decided to get started with some calf and thigh workouts now that that leg is getting better. Also did a lot of crunches, about 160. Oh, and a word to the guy at my gym who combs his grea... read more

I was waiting until the rain let up this morning, but it never quite did, so I was running in a steady drizzle. Oh well! I wasn't looking at the Garmin and put it in my pocket, so I could take it slow and not think about pace. I just ran what was com... read more

Nice run! Sometimes it helps to give Garmin a break and just run by feel.

Maybe it's from being in Southern California, but I love running in a light rain. Keeps me cool. I guess elsewhere it's not as pleasant.

Congrats on the pace! I love running in the rain - but it's usually not a cold rain around here. And congrats on hill work - I should do it, but I don't. Ever. =)

I really like running in a light rain too, it was just the worry that it would become a heavy rain (which is more the norm in SoFla) - but that worry was probably what motivated me to move a little faster, so it's good all around!

    greatAwesome Yoga Class 01:30

Just what the doctor ordered: lots of balance poses and controlled stretches. I feel like yoga woke me up and brought me back into the correct time zone. Did Natarajasana: http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/936

    • Christie Christie

Jet lag? I haven't done that pose in months. But I was very surprised that I could actually do it.

The time difference from Portland was making me feel like I'd lost sleep, but now I'm awake! I know - that pose looks so impressive. Just the balance alone was good to feel.

I really like squeezing in a run before I have to be on a plane for most of the day. Still needed to take it easy, since my calves haven't stopped complaining about my overly exuberant run the first day. Those hills are not foolin!
