Sometimes it is as hard to keep my speed and effort DOWN as it is to push it up a notch. I find that there are days when I know that I need to push a little bit harder and I have to really discipline myself to do so. Somedays, I'm just not feeling it. Other days, when an easy-effort recovery ride is in order, I let the numbers on my cycling computer taunt me - to punk me into driving just a little harder. "I managed a 17 avg on the way out. With just a little more effort, I can probably get a 19 on the way back."
Today, however, I determined, before I left the house, to keep my avg at or below 15. I is such a nice day - temperature around 40; sun shining, no wind; and I felt strong. I did it, though. My max speed only hit 19, and that on a slight downhill. No big pushes. No out-of-the-saddle sprints. Just an easy, low heart rate spin with a cadence around 100. An enjoyable ride. I should do it more.
