I accepted the Base Miles Challenge ( http://www.dailymile.com/challenges/657-base-miles ) - knowing that it was a little late to be starting it, but also knowing that I really had nothing better to do for the next 500 miles. Most of my miles are commutes to and from work or solo out-and -backs. I will start doing a few club rides in April but I knew that I could get the 500 miles out of the way by then.
The challenging part of the challenge is not the physical element - low gear, low heart rate, high RPM, in fact, that is pretty easy in terms of exertion - but the mental. I just want to GO sometimes. My shortest commute is 9 miles. This now takes me around 40 minutes. The 16 miler that I have been taking takes a full hour and 30. The 20 miler that I had hoped to do is virtually out of the question if I hope to get to work on time and home again before bedtime. Also, the 50 mile O/Bs that I would like to do on my day off would nearly consume ALL of my day off.
I really am not complaining. I really do get the logic behind the idea and I am willing to try it to see what benefit I derive from it. That said, it DOES take some patience to stick to it day after day, mile after monotonous mile. So, from this experience, today's Baiku:
"Base Miles", challenged @Rnair.
I spin and spin and still feel
I am getting nowhere.

Scott not familiar with the Base Miles term Can you clarify for me?

It is under "challenges"( http://www.dailymile.com/challenges/657-base-miles ). The idea being to build a good base of high RPM, low heart rate miles early in the season before pushing hard in the spring. The challenge suggests that you ride 800kn(500 miles) at 100 rpm and keep your heart rate low. To do so, they suggest that you limit yourself to 39x19/21 gearing, and to do that strictly, until you've completed the 500 miles. I am doing most of it on my MTB so I am using a 42x21/23(roughly stated: 2:1)

Interesting. I could not do that and hope to complete the March Millenium. Not enough time to ride. Arent you already beyond 500 miles?

not for that challenge. I just started it a week or so ago. I really have been doing that type of riding most of the winter, so if I just bailed on it now, I'm probably in pretty good shape. But, again, I've got nothing better to do. I can finish it before April. If nothing else, I will finish it up while in Florida the first week of April.
