Maybe you are subconsciously pacing yourself slower, in preparation for running a longer distance that you aren't 100% sure you can reach?

I know when I do a new workout, I pace myself slower on purpose so I get a feeling for how much gas I have left over after finishing. If I feel unspent when done, I know next time I can step it up.

I just hate going all out in a new workout, getting completely exhausted and not knowing if it was the combo of work that did me in, or if I blew my wad too soon.

Stuff like this happens. I can think of two remedies. 1) Change your speed workout to shorter, but faster intervals. My coach had me do 50m, 100m, 150m, and 200m intervals when my (speed) legs were stale. 2) Add strides to your regular runs. Do 6 x 100m strides during your semi-long runs or even during recovery runs. - And one last thing. I notice that I run faster when I relax more. I focus on my shoulders and upper body to keep it relaxed which makes my legs go faster.

Your legs are tired. Rest up. It will come back.

And dont' worry about it. Worrying doesn't help. (Trust me...been there done that several times.)

a few interval sessions will cure that.. but the mileage is creating the muscles you need to go the distance.

It's the mileage. There is a cumulative tiredness that builds over time. It's good though to train on tired legs, because once you rest them up you'll hit paces with ease.

i agree with sheila..legs are tired. you're not going to loose your speed. just make sure you are rested before your next speed workout. if you try to do speed workouts when your tired it will lead to bad form.
    2 cents.

    you're doing so well runnrgrl!!

I also agree with Sheila. Running is accumulative. Just rest and you'll be fine.

probably over training. Consider taking beta alanine as a supplement. it helps to reduce muscle soreness.

One thing you may want to try after your rest a bit, do a hill climb on the TM. Set the elevation between 5% - 8%, set the speed to your estimated marathon pace. Run steadily between 5 to 20K. Mix this in with your regular training once a week, it should help you with speed. It's a thought :)

Does your program have you dropping mileage volume but retaining speedwork and tempos?

Yep that always seems to say rest a little. Also would look at fuel and fluid. Have you increased your intake commensurate with the mileage increase?

    All is good, no worries...

Trailultra - ok, so my program does have me dropping volume and keeping up speed & tempo work after the next 10 days.
Michael - i don't take fluids or fuel for 10 milers...are you saying i should?
Rob- i run alot of hills as part of my training runs no matter what they are...i don't have flats where i live. or they dont seem flat anymore. legs too tired to notice :)
Christytris- i take a protein drink now with beta alanine - has really had a huge impact on reducing soreness.
    Thanks for insight & support.

can someone tell me what Strides are?
the thought that went through my mind last time was that training prepares me best for running on tired legs bc mine are tired all the time. i have no pep but i can keep going for a long time. just feels like i should be a little zippier....:)

thanks again leo, sheila, michael, ron, david, ctreit,gina...

Strides are done typically down the straight away of the track (so about 100m). You basically pick up your pace and run a smooth, short, fast distance. Usually I do some strides to warmup for races, and also as part of my warmup before speed intervals on the track.

Fuel on anything more than 45 minutes for sure. You only have enough glycogen for about that length then you run out of ready access. This then causes a performance drop which harms your workout in that you can not get the gains (via better performance) you should.

Fluids, I hope you mean caloric ones? Because of course you want to be drinking at least water more or less constantly. You should have minimum 16-20 oz (MIN) per hr. All will help fatigue, you will be amazed at increase (mental 2)

Ok, Michael - i should drink 20 oz of water an hour...i'm not that big. i'd throw up. and for long runs i take gels every 45 min but not for my regular wk runs. ok, i'll add in gels and drink a bit more and see what that does.
Thank you Sheila. I will definitely give them a try.
