Rode home with the Russian. Quite windy today and a little on the chilly side. Some people were carelessly standing across the trail; Russian and I went to pass them, and there was an oncoming cyclist without enough space to move. I rode straight of the trail and on to the grass, and about 3 seconds after I did this he turned straight in front of me and I hit his rear wheel and went down. Bar tape torn and the rear wheel was knocked out of true by the force of me going down. I did manage to unclip and put a foot down, so while I couldn't stop the bike wheel from taking the force of the blow, I did avoid any major damage. Completely my fault in my eyes, although why he decided to turn directly in front of me when I had turned off the trail enough to avoid hitting him is beyond me. Panic and target fixation I guess.
Quickly asked the guy, "Are you ok?"
"Yes, ar-"
"Do you need me to stick around?"
"No... are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." *gone*
I hit his wheel, and while I think it was fine, I wasn't really willing to stick around and exchange details.
Pulled the Russian for about 10 mi before he got tired; we slowed right down after that and caught up to his gf, where we slowed down even more. I turned around and came home early to fix my bike and go out.
All in all a good ride, especially since there was nothing seriously bad about what happened with the bike. It now sports some electrical tape, the rear wheel has been re-trued, and all is right in the world.

Main point is no one got injured. I was wondering Kris on your fixie what kind of clip-ins do you use? I am considering getting one maybe for Christmas.

Sounds like you did the right thing to me. When it comes to cars (and especially when I was in CDL school) you always turn to the right to go off the road instead of into traffic. The guy should have turned to the right as well. Turning left into oncoming traffic was a bad idea.
Glad all is well!

Thanks guys. It was a bad weekend all round actually for people crashing (too much sun, too many people riding around not used to riding).
@Jamie: I use SPD clip ins on MTB single sided platforms. I would not recommend them for performance, but they are incredibly easy to use and very reliable.
