36F, sunny and clear this morning, northerly wind. Reminds me of Perth in the spring time.
Was hoping to catch the Internet Explorer team at Zoka's this morning, but they weren't there when I swung by at their usual time. They rode yesterday so maybe today they were taking a day off. Although today it was gorgeous, so that seemed like a bad idea.
Couldn't find my legs so when I came across 5 old guys riding at 10 mph, I decided to relax with them for a few miles. I'd seen the one on the end before; he has a very distinctive horn on his bike. After chatting to them, I discovered these guys go out for a ride, every weekday morning, no matter what the weather to Kenmore. Between them they've got several ailments; one was recovering from cancer, one had just had a knee replacement, another had a hip replacement... what a great bunch. The classic hipster passed us on a fixie - little hat, skinny jeans, lock hanging out of back pocket, messenger bag, tiny little handlebars... I almost laughed out loud. After I parted ways with the old guys who were headed to Jay's Cafe in Kenmore, I caught up and passed that guy.
Found my legs chasing after another rider. He had this weird contraption on his seat stay, which was wired to a box sitting on the top of the chain stay. The box had a second wire running to the jockey wheel on the dérailleur, which gave me a big hint about what it was: power meter. I rode up alongside him, doing about 22 mph at the time, and asked him if my guess was right. It was!
We tore up the trail and picked up one other rider; power meter guy led for the first section, pick up rider was next, I led for the third, before the pick up rider dropped off the back unable to keep the pace and it was just power meter guy and me. I followed him all the way to the bridge where we parted ways. The sprint made up for doing 10 mph earlier in the ride.
Climbed the hill at a leisurely pace. No one to catch, no one to wait for, so just did it at my own speed. Drafted closely behind one of the big F-truck vans used for transporting Microsoft employees for a bit at 24 mph, before turning in to the office. Feel pretty good, although today's ride was a bit cold for the mesh shoes.
