Not a happy camper ride. Alex was really slow & struggling through the snow. We never really figured out why, but I think his tire pressure was too high & the studded tires were offering too much resistance. We ended up taking a detour route, riding on SR522 and going so slow that I was trackstanding. You can definitely see where he and I parted ways and I put some speed on to get home.

I ended up getting a flat and dinging the rim on the wheel, so now I need to build a new wheel - I can ride on it, but it definitely needs to be rebuilt. I should be able to use a trick that I heard about once - you tape the two rims together, unlace the spokes on the first wheel, lace them on the second wheel and tighten them that way. If I do it right, it should cost me around $45 for a new wheel. The only other thing is if I want to switch out the hub. Right now it has a Surly 135mm hub, but that's the wrong size hub for the frame - it should be 130mm. I'll see if I can get a hub for cheap, if I can I'll switch out the hub too. Looks like I'll be building two wheels, not just one.

Well, I bent it back so it can mount the tire at the very least, but the rim is done and it's probably only good for short trips to the store. Symmetrical wheels are easy to do, so all I need really are the raw materials, a spoke wrench & some rim tape. The real trouble is if I switch out the hub, I need to re-cut/replace the spokes too, as the spoke length will be different - essentially rim replace vs. build a whole new wheel.

Bummer ride home, man. Enjoy building up the new wheel.
