Ran a 10K race...got 4th place with a time of 45:06...wish I had pushed a little harder on that last mile and maybe I would have placed but I was tired. The thing is that the gals who got 2nd and 3rd they both ran the marathon last week too so they were as tired as I was (meaning, I have no excuse). A bit disappointed in my performance, it is not that I didn't have it in me, I just didn't push it hard enough.

The race was a 2 loop course and after the first loop I felt great and finishing the second loop I was ready to be done then as I neared the finish line and the place where the announcer had said to turn, I was ready to finish then to my surprise there was a sign for the 10K runners to keep going up one more block south then one block east then one block west then back down. Well, I was ready to be done at the sign! It is amazing what the mind can do to our bodies. In my head, I had already made up my mind to be done at that corner and I had sent that signal to my body so when I had to readjust, I lost my 3rd place :(. I felt mad at myself, at my slowness, at my short little legs that couldn't keep going, at my toes that are sore from last week's marathon, at the crappy food that I have been putting in my body for the past week--yeah each ice cream cone that I have had each week night this week. It took me a block to get my mind back into the course and then I was able to keep running, slowly but I kept going. The gal who took 3rd ended 5 seconds before me...5 seconds is not much, I could have done it but I didn't and it is bugging me like hell.

Next year, I think I am going to concentrate on a little bit more speedwork and hopefully I will start performing a bit better....if I could only find the time to train more.

Don't beat yourself up, Isela. It's tough to switch gears from marathon pace to 5k and 10k pacing in races. Next time you'll know the course, and the deceptive finish (that's happened to me a couple of times, and it sucks!). Still a GREAT pace!

Isela, when we compare ourselves to others we always look really good or really bad--don't do that. You're not walking in their shoes nor are they walking in yours. I know you couldn't help but think of the other two ladies running the marathon last week as well, but always run your race. They may have done a lot more speedwork etc. You're a fantastic runner in your own right--what if you had concentrated on speedwork. You PRd by 3 minutes how much more could you ask for.

Also, 5 seconds is huge in a race when everyone is pushing hard at the end. Although I know you said you didn't push hard enough--I'm sure you gave it everything (as did your competitors) during the last 1/2 mile.
