So, I got a heart rate monitor for Christmas and decided to be a bit smarter about my "running". I ran last Friday with the intention of keeping within 50-60% of my max HR, and quickly realized that meant that I can't really run for more than a minute without my HR going up to 80-90%. It means I've been running with a ridiculously high HR and that's probably why I get so sore and injured.
So, I'm walking now until I can lower my threshold. I'll probably we walking for the next few months until I can train my heart... and then I'll gradually start working up to running.
Nice thing is I don't get sore from walking and I'm probably more in a fat burning zone with my current walking HR... and I'll be able to do it everyday because I don't get terribly tired and sore like I did when I was running.
That said, I'm going to try to do a light 30 minute run twice a week to push myself a little... I'm still deciding about that. Not sure how good that would be, but if any of you have advice, I'm all ears.
And BTW... it's oh so freezing out there!

I'm with you Lu...I need to do something that feels good but I would like to push myself harder. I am committed to consistency and trying to stay focused on that. Hopefully, I will then work up a bit. Good luck. Be proud of yourself for getting out in the cold and moving!

Consistency is key. Now I understand that taking it easy in the beginning will help me to consistently do exercise... step by step. It's really hard not to run, but I'm already feeling the benefits so it's really motivating me to keep it up.
