Toughest run I've had in a long time. My knees were really tight and didn't loosen up until mile 2 and my left arch and shins hurt! I set out to do 6 but wanted to stop a mile and a half into it but completed a 5K. What causes arch pain?

How old are your shoes, Christina? Do you run in stability shoes? Any chance they've worn down and the arch support has faded? Good job getting through a 5K!

Thanks, Michael! I got my shoes at the beginning of this month. I have the Brooks Adrenaline.

Has your arch or shins hurt at all before today? If they are new shoes you don't normally wear, I could see how the pain/discomfort might build until it peaks on a day like today. However, if it just struck out of the blue, that's a bit odd.

I was having left foot arch issues so that's why I went to get new shoes because my previous ones were random Asics I got at Nordstrom Rack. I've had minor shin discomfort but it was manageable and disappeared a few minutes into the run but tonight, it hung around longer. Shin was fine by the end of the run though.

Didn't you just run ten miles two days ago? And you had a half marathon last week end. Maybe you haven't given your body enough of a rest period? I am sad you were in so much pain :(

That sounds like common shin splints to me. They often disappear once people get warmed up, but then can hurt horribly later. Did you go to a running store and have them look at your stride or walk around to try to analyze your gait? I'm guessing you did if you got Adrenaline's. I think some shoe stores just automatically put people in the most popular shoe rather than analyze your gait properly.

I had these issues pre half marathon. I may see a physical therapist. I'm icing my arch and knees right now. I got fitted for the shoes and they had me run on a treadmill while they video recorded my gait.

May be worth a chiro consult too; shoes can only do so much if your spine is wonked. Also hate to be "that person" but it may give your knees + shins a break to try some minimalist running? Sorted me out anyway, and I sound like someone's crushing eggshells in my knees when I walk.

Try compression socks for your shins? I don't know about the arch pain, but definitely see a Physical Therapist (one that your running shoe store recommends) and address your issues. He/she can give you some stretching moves and advice on what you should do.

If you are having multiple symptoms I'm wondering if you're hips are tight or misaligned. Have you tried lots of hips stretching? Just a thought. The arch can be shoes, irritated nerves...I hope you start feeling better soon. Great getting a 5k in!
