  1. RUN
good Hunt Club 7.85 mi 01:05 08:17 pace

Supposed to run 70 minutes, but stopped ten minutes before nine o'clock because that's when the gym closes. Don't want to be "That Guy." People want to go home!

  2. Chicago’s longest late-season 32-degree or lower stretch on record is over. At 3:32 pm this afternoon the mercury at O’Hare International Airport, the city’s official weather observation site, hit ... read more

Winter’s dead but he don’t know it yet

  4. RUN
good Farewell, Beard 6.55 mi 00:58 08:46 pace

Felt grumpy at the start, but quite a bit better by the end.

This is why I grew a beard for winter!

  6. RUN
    Barrington Hills 17.7 mi 02:18 07:48 pace

This was a cold one, but the wind was calm and the sun was shining! Temperatures rose steadily from below zero up into 20 degrees by the end.

  7. RUN
good Hunt Club Recovery Run 6.8 mi 01:05 09:33 pace

This is off the treadmill display. Garmin Foot Pod said I ran 11.52 miles in 1:04:42 with a "best pace" of 8:35. How is that even possible.

  8. RUN
good 30 Minute Threshold Run 10 mi 01:16 07:38 pace

On the treadmill. It was nice and warm. Running threshold pace for 30 minutes—was hard. But, I did it.

  9. RUN
great Streak Mile 1.01 mi 00:09:27 09:22 pace

    Squeaky fresh snow!

For those who missed the Emily Dickinson reference because they were too busy running the hallways for track in High School.

  11. RUN
great “Hope” is the thing with feat... 7.72 mi 01:04 08:19 pace

Stopped to listen to house finches singing. Spring is coming!

Time to move someplace warm in winter: Alaska! Receding polar ice is weakening the jet stream, causing our lovely new friend, the slow-moving Polar Vortex. ... read more

  13. RUN
good Foot Pod at Hunt Club 8.36 mi 01:10 08:22 pace

First attempt running with a Garmin Foot Pod on the treadmill. Didn't calibrate it yet, but it seemed to match what the treadmill was saying (pretty much) so that was encouraging.

Strava doesn't know what to do if you take a five-minute break in the middle of a treadmill workout. Pausing works fine for GPS, but they just include a gap of zero velocity in the middle! Good jorb, Strava.

Here it is! My cold-finger solution. Wool sock rolled over wool gloves. Then, the wind-proof over-mitt on top.

  15. RUN
good Breezy Sunshine 7.03 mi 01:05 09:15 pace

I was kind of under-dressed for my Friday evening run, so I over-compensated this time with long underwear, layers of headgear, a live badger, and so on. It was fine.

Garmin Foot Pod arrived! I'll calibrate it outside tomorrow and we'll see what my tiny new friend can tell me about my treadmill runs.

  18. RUN
good Saturday morning with Libert... 18 mi 02:34 08:33 pace

Was planning on a 17 miler tomorrow, but how could I pass up an 18 mile group run this morning instead? Hills are hillier in the daytime. It's warmer than previously, but still damn cold.

  20. RUN
good Slippy Sixteen 7.1 mi 01:03 08:51 pace

16°F but the 16 mph wind in the face heading out really sucked.
