alright 18-miler from home 18.02 mi 02:29 08:16 pace

Kept this run nice and easy. I would have liked to just go naked, but I'm trying to time my drinking every 12 minutes to mimic the frequency of race water stops. I felt great until about mile 14, and the wheels just came off. My nutrition yesterday wasn't great, but I did carry some gels with me. I think the killer, though, was the temperature. In July, an 80-degree afternoon would have been heaven; in January, it's just too much. I teetered on the edge of Bonkville for the last few miles and had to fight off the walking thoughts many times. A stiff breeze didn't help either. If we get weather like today on race day, things could get pretty rough.

Wow 80 in January is hot! Sounds like you have the clues to the nutrition issues. The heat of course could have increased the rate of loss of electrolytes too. Either ways still a very solid 18 miler Nicholas!

Great pace, great distance! It's unseasonably warm here in FL too, kinda strange. Way to hang in there, Nicholas!

Thanks, Brian. Sipping water every 12 minutes did not cut it at these temps. I miserably failed the pee test afterward.

Thanks, Cyndi. Unfortunately, this does not bode well for our summer. It will probably be filled with 100 degree days and zero rain again. :-/

I tend to carry salt in a camera roll tub or drop a pinch or 2 into the camelbak, but then again if I was running in 80F I'd need a drink every 12 seconds:-)!

This is the only downfall about Texas! Even though I complain about how cold it is in Ireland, it's definitely a better place to train. Great 18 regardless!

great work pushing through the heat today - if for some reason race day happens to be like that, at least you will have trained it it and learned lessons!

@Brian: I usually carry s-caps in a tube. You're right, it's a great way to stay on top of the electrolytes. @Julie: I wouldn't trade it, but it just seems way too early for these temps. @Candace: You're right; you never know what you'll get on race day. Around here, it could be 80, or it could be 30!

No doubt 80 degrees is brutal, way to tough it out Nicholas.
