I'll try to make this short. Aggressive goal was 2:42. Kevin was going to pace me since he's been injured for the last 6 weeks and missed a bunch of training. We lasted a mile together before he took off. (he ended up running 2:32. How he did that on no training...I have no clue)
The race was dark since it started at 5:30am and I ran most of it solo. Not a lot of people around. I managed to best my old (horrible) 1/2 marathon PR when I went though in 1:21:57. I took water at every stop and managed to consume gels at miles 8 and 17. I hit the 22 mile mark right at 6:15 pace (a little slower than I was hoping) but it seemed to be the pace that my body wanted to run. In the 23rd mile, I got a nasty side cramp that only allowed me to run in the high 6:50s. This same cramp has affected me a few other times; including my first and only 1/2 marathon, a few races and some random training runs. Not sure of the cause and it's completely random. The last few miles were rough. I stopped twice to stretch the cramp and I had to run while pushing in on my side. Needless to say, i was happy when i crossed the line. Not the ending I was hoping for, but finishing in 2:46:34 shattered my old marathon PR of 3:04:41 that I set in November of 2009.
Thanks to everyone for all of their notes of support and encouragement. I thought of you all during the whole race.
