great 5k race 3.1 mi 00:18 05:55 pace

New PR at 18:22 and I won the race!! (my first win)

The band is playing out of town this weekend so I decided to stay the weekend and run in a 5k. It was the "1st Annual Domestic Violence 5k"
Being from out of town, I didn't know any of the racers, how fast they were, who to run with, etc... I started off in 4th as the front 3 started off like bats out of hell. Thinking they were going to keep that pace, they surprised me when they slowed down and I caught up with them around the first mile. When I was passing the second place guy, I asked him how fast he usually runs and he told me around 20. I looked down at my Garmin and noticed that we were going slower than I wanted so I picked up the pace. I passed the leader on an uphill just past the 1 mile mark and he seemed very winded. I never looked back. I knew once I passed him that the race was mine.
It's weird leading a race, especially on a course that you've never seen. Luckily there were plenty of volunteers around to show me the way.
The course was hilly and though a series of residential roads. I felt super strong the whole way and had there been some people with me, I think I could finished in the 17's.

Since this was the 1st annual, does that mean I hold the race record for the fastest time? ;)

Splits:
6:05, 6:11, 6:06 (1.1 miles)

Love these new Brooks T6 racers!
