This is my 3rd year racing this 5k and love doing it to compare my fitness level from year to year.
I took the race out hard from the beginning (as usual) and found myself leading but for only a short period. A HS kid passed me early on so I stuck in behind him. The first 1/2 mile is uphill and my legs immediately felt like junk. This was not a good sign. I checked my time at the 1/2 mile and it was way too slow. Luckily, I soon had a screaming downhill to use to my advantage to which I passed the kid just before the mile marker hitting it in 5:23.
The second mile heads back up the same incline we just came down but it's more gradual. At the top of the last part of the hill, I could no longer hear him behind me. For some reason, this mile was terrible coming in at a 5:35.
Once I saw that, I knew I had to kick in the final mile if I wanted to smash my PR. During the last mile, I felt so smooth, fresh and under control...almost as if I was finally warmed up. I dropped a 5:18 for that mile and a :25 for the remainder to bring me through the finish line first overall and with a new PR of 16:41.
As much as I'm ecstatic about a new PR, I'm really frustrated about my 2nd mile. I know I can run faster than this. Maybe the fact that 2nd place was 46 seconds behind me might be another reason why my time was slower than I wanted. It's hard to push yourself with no one around.
I'm now 5-0 on the course.
Time in 2009. 17:41
Time in 2010. 16:59
Time in 2011. 16:40

New PR, 18 seconds faster than last year, and another victory to remain undefeated on the course. Yup, looks like that second mile was truly awful.

"It's hard to push yourself with no one around." I wouldn't know that feeling. Caleb talked about that in Long Beach. I was in such a pack that Wayne couldn't find me because I'm so short! Way to go. Great run and great win.

Great job today, Matt! Even though you were a little frustrated with that 2nd mile, your overall pace was phenomenal! I'm sure you'll get that second mile right where you want it to be next time! Keep it up :)

Good report, Matt! You own that course. There's a couple local 5k's coming up where I'm sure you will get that second mile figured out. Local runners LOOK OUT!

Thanks everyone.
Vernon - I forgot all about that race. I'm not sure. It all depends on XC practice as I wanted to try and run your race as well.
