great Tiara Classic 5K, Mattapoisett 3.11 mi 00:31 09:57 pace

New 5K PR, 30:58 @ 9:59 pace. First time running this flat & fast course in Mattapoisett (although it does cover some of the same ground of the 5-mile road race in July). Wasn't expecting to PR today, although I'd been hoping for it. A good downhill at the end helped propel me along to that end. The start of the race was a bit weird: I thought we were running, and then we stopped and ended up at the REAL start line a tenth or two down the road. Went out a little fast at first, and paid for it by having to walk a couple hundred meters in the middle of the 2nd mile, going up a little incline. But that downhill at the end made up for it. Race was crowded, elbow-to-elbow, with lots of kids and strollers making things a little treacherous. It opened up half a mile in and I was able to run better. The striders work I'd done worked here, as I was better able to speed up and pick up some time here & there, then slow down a tiny bit to recover, and so on. Had a great time with Nik W. & Bernadette M. (happy Mother's Day, mom), and got to meet up with some great friends too.

(Incidentally, I HAD thought my 5K PR was 30:37 at ING Hartford in October 2010, because that's the figure I'd read off the printouts posted right after that race. After Buckeye Outdoors crashed recently, I had to look up my races and times again on Athlinks and I saw that at some point my time had been revised to 31:40. Not sure why. It was still a PR all this time, but by less than I'd thought. Anyway, now my new PR is this race for sure.)

Thanks Steve! Definitely have come a ways from my first runs. Looking at my stats, this is 11 minutes faster than my first-ever 5K. The new me could beat the old me and then already start driving away back home

well in a "Dr Who" style time travel, maybe the new you can run back and give the old you a gee up 5.5 minutes from the finish line!

Sweet PR, under 10:00 pace! I've got to get me some of this flat and fast action. For some reason I keep ending up with the hilly races.

That's a great new PR Dan! You are really getting fast. Think I'll have to try the Uncle Pfitzy 5K plan, it's clearly worked for you :-)
