tired New Jersey half-marathon 13.23 mi 03:01 13:42 pace

Not the best race. The night before, Nik had a bad peanut allergy attack (I think the sushi restaurant we went to toasts its sesame seeds in peanut oil). I had to give her an epinephrine shot to keep her tongue from swelling up & we went to the ER around 3 a.m. I at least got a couple of hours of sleep -- she only got 2 because of the adrenaline shot. So she didn't run her marathon at all. I was worried about running myself, because I wouldn't be able to watch her, but she thought at least one of us should run. I had heard temps would be in the mid- to upper 80s, but starting out by the chilly oceanfront was deceiving. Within one mile of the start, I was already feeling the heat. I had intended to stick with the 5:15 pace group (12 min/mile), but couldn't find the pacer. Instead, I found both the 5:30 and 5:45 pacers running side by side at about 11:30 pace, and the poor 5:30 guy looking like he was already struggling. So I tried to keep myself between 12 and 12:30. Worked OK for several miles, but eventually the broiling sun caught up with me. I haven't acclimated -- it was 40 degrees in Fall River just before we left, 85 in New Jersey and there's no shade on the course. The sun was roasting, relieved only by kind people spraying hoses onto the street. I soaked myself at every one. Walked and ran half-and-half each mile for a while until I got a second wind at mile 10 after someone handed out ice on the course & I dumped some down the back of my shirt. I eventually finished, but it's my slowest half yet and I was totally wiped out by the end. At least I have a fourth HM medal and a nice sunburn as a souvenir.

Thanks -- she's a trouper. I told her to stay at the hotel & rest, but she insisted on coming to the race with me to watch it even though she was exhausted.

Oh, wow! Did I miss that she was allergic to peanuts back when you guys were recording, or is that a new development? Either way, what a shame! Good job on finishing; I think heat affected a lot of races this weekend.

Carrie: I don't think we ever mentioned it. She's been kind of allergic for a while, but it's getting a lot worse lately. Anything with peanuts or peanut oil really bothers her -- last night was the worst, because her throat and tongue started to swell. She carries an injection in case of emergency, and I had to jam it into her leg. Scary stuff!

oh wow, race sounds like it was a bit brutal, good job perservering. 85 dang! That is very tough, esp when you haven't acclimated. Poor Nik. I hope you guys mention it to the restaurant so they don't end up killing someone.

Thanks so much, everybody. Nik's doing much better -- the meds she was on were keeping her awake for a while, but she rebooted herself with some sleep and she's feeling great.
