Retirement day for my first ever running shoes. Goodbye and thanks for 400 miles of faithful service. I bought "cheapish sale" trainers from a dept. store this past Spring because I didn't know if I'd stick to running or not. I did promise myself that if I made it through a few races and got hooked then I'd upgrade to a "real" pair of shoes once these got their slightest sign of wear or if they get to 400 miles or so. No injuries or many pains to speak of, but tonight I'll do the whole foot, gait and arch measurement, shoe wear pattern and video/treadmill analysis thing. I'm predicting a normal arch and a pretty normal footstrike with a focus on 25-35 miles a week in the next 3-4 months. Any suggestions? Yes I'll try on a bunch of pairs and pick what fits ME best ...but just just thought I'd get some tips ahead of time too :)

Oh...I did run today (back to that) .... a normal 3+ on an incredible sunny and just about 60 degree day in February! :) Rockin' the shorts and tshirt for my shoe send-off. Doesn't get much better than that. Avg HR 141 (79%max)

Depends on what you've been wearing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Brooks Pure Flow but they have have a lower heel drop so they take some getting used to if you haven't been running in a more minimal shoe.

Nice send off for your reliable 'ol kicks! I love my Saucony Kinvaras. I have two pair that I rotate. Good luck choosing new ones, and have fun!

I run in most of the Brooks neutral and Pure shoes. My favorites have been the Grit for trails and the Launch for roads, though I'm sure I'll love the Connect too. But you;ve got the right mindset, get what works for YOU

Agree about the weather. No shirt here today, 70 and sunshine!

I know what you mean about moving on from that 1st faithful pair that was there for your running start. I hope you get good advice from your running store tonight. I prefer minimalist shoes... they've allowed my feet to strengthen rather than trying to provide the support my body needs artificially so I go with the lower-drop shoes (like Heather R said). Good luck finding the right next pair! And good for you getting out in this spring-like weather!

Try the Brooks PureFlow or PureConnects. I've had good success with them over the past 5 months. Both shoes are around 90 bucks. A specialty store should have them and you can try them on to see if you'll like them.

I love love love my Nike Free Run +2's. But you're going the right path by getting fit tested. Get what works for you and don't let anybody tell you different.

As long as you spend 80+ you should end up with a good pair of shoes... sounds like you are going to a running store, so you will be set.. find out what their policy is about returning. The store near me will let shoe companies sponsor group runs and everyone can try a pair of their shoes for a group run. I'm able to tell in just a few miles if I will bilster from the pair. If the pair you had felt good on your feet, then I would stay with that brand and follow their reccomendations for the model.

@RunnerG Yes...going to a running store so I'll probably spend 20% more than the same shoe would cost online, BUT it's also a clinic for a race my running club is sponsoring, so I have a 20% off coupon...so seems like a wash :)

Michael- I found that my local running store was selling shoes for the SAME price as amazon/road runner with the benefit of expert fitting. :) Coupons are awesome. I got a gift cert in a drawing and reward bucks from my running store and ended up paying $5.75 for a $65 brooks running shirt and a headsweats visor. It was a great day in my world.

Agree with everyone above that a good shoe store can be your best friend. I really like my Brooks Pure but I won a free pair of New Balance for signing up for a race recently (I never win anything). I'm thinking about using this as an opportunity to try their Minimus shoe.

I wear Saucony Guide. Whenever you figure out which shoe you want, go to http://www.runningwarehouse.com and you can find some great deals on current and previous year editions and the shipping is normally free and super quick.

I am a huge fan of the lighterweight, lower heel toe drop, more flexible shoe. The Brooks pure connects are awesome as well as the new balance minimus roads and 1400s.

Tried a pair of brooks revenna 2 and really liked th feal, 'cept the fabric rubbed my little toes. Went back for a saucony mirage. I really like the super low heal, even smaller drop then the revenna. Totally in love with the oversized toe box, at first it felt a little sloppy, but now that I'm used to it, so happy.

Nice running. A lot of it, I think, depends on the current shoes you run in--you don't want a drastic change quickly. I run in and love my Inov8 Bare-X's, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone who didn't want to transition slowly, for example :).

Thanks all. I ended up pretty much what I thought. Normal/medium arch, normal weight shift, normal gait and strike on my left foot and slight outward landing on my right foot...squarely in the "neutral" shoe category.Tried on 7 pairs and went with the Brooks Ghost 4...I know..how boring to pick a top seller lol They just fit like a glove on my feet.

cont: I had already had my eye on them or the Brooks Glycerin 9 as a neutral shoe. For NOW I went with the Ghost because it seems to excel as an all around shoe for getting my foot wet (pun!) with shorter (3-5 mi) mid-week runs and long runs up to 12-13 miles during my half training and then some spring 5Ks and 10Ks. By the time I get through the summer and start to think about a full marathon training and longer long runs then the Glycerin might fit the bill for the longer training distance.
