Depends on what you've been wearing. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Brooks Pure Flow but they have have a lower heel drop so they take some getting used to if you haven't been running in a more minimal shoe.

Nice run Michael, and those shoes deserve a happy retirement. I've been happy with Brooks and Mizuno, but as you stated, it's such a personal preference.

I really need another pair or two. Something for around town, and another pair for training would be pretty sweet.

Thanks all! @The Thin Seeker: I'd say it's just different. I'm very used to the elliptical and the workout is probably similar. You can set resistance on an elliptical, so the effort is whatever you set it to. I still use it once a week or so on running "rest" days because it is low impact.

I'll throw out my own answer to my own question (DORK!)

I'm doing the Higdon half plan (novice II) and still following it to a T. My LSR have always been in the 65 to 75% HRmax zone. Since that zone is huge I have been relying on recent race performances to plug into pace calculators (I love the McMillan one). I only use the calculated paces as a rough guide and maybe I get bored easily because I mix them up a lot, but still stay slow enough to be in that aerobic zone suggested for LSR.

cont: I think my avg, for EZ & long runs over the last month or so have been 72-76% and that feels just about right for me pace & exertion-wise. As I get past the two halfs I have scheduled and onto marathon training in the summer the LSR will get longer and I'll mess around with the split pace LR where the 1st 10 mi are at EZ and subsequent miles go to MP + 1:00 then MP + :30 to MP. Will help with neg splits too. For now I'm good with all aerobic pace (70-75% HRm)

I know that groove. I bet its similar for most. Somewhere right below that zone where you really start working the heart and burring lots of sugar. For me I think its at about 79% effort/HR or what calculators tell me about 65% V02, which just so happens to be about 165 steps/per minute, and a 9:45 minute mile I feel like I can run forever. Thats not a good long run pace if I want to build more endurance.

Due to a missing TM I go out for a run at all weather. Coldest day this winter was about 0°F. That´s really cold for northern Germany. I´m more afraid of the icy ways.

A friend put me onto it and I stayed holed up in my little corner of DM just so I could log my exercise to help motivate me to do something. Finally decided to open the doors and welcome in customers a little while ago and haven't looked back . Intially motivation and support but I like having a joke or two in my posts as well. In addition there is a wealth of information on here which can be tapped - you just have to reach out and ask. Nicest bunch of peeps on here too just to add icing on the cake. :)

Cont. He wrote back and said plan "B" was exactly what he'd suggest, but at a very easy pace. Funny I was scanning his message board later and saw someone also asked if they could break up their 20 mile LSR before a marathon and his answer was "only if you're running in a marathon where they do 13.1 in the morning and another 13.1 later in the day" LOL
