Not wanting to play pre-dawn chicken with cars on a busy streets, I drove out to Brookshire for a nice, easy ride through the country. I was supposed to do 50 today, but overestimated this course and figured another 6 wouldn't really do much.
About 10 miles into the ride I came up on an intersection and kept my right arm on the aero bars while signaling with my left for a turn. Before I knew it my front wheel was turned and I was overtop of my bars, without a way to brake. I hit the pavement going almost 20. Got some nice road rash on my hands and body, elbows cut up and left kneecap a little swollen. Front wheel got a little out of balance, so I loosened up the front brakes so it wouldn't rub. Repositioned my bars and decided to keep going instead of returning to the car. I'm glad I did, because it turned out to be a great ride. My knee hurts a little still, but no permanent damage, just needs ice.
Had a headwind most of the way up and a tailwind most of the way back. The route had some nice little hills, but overall pretty flat. I rode at race effort for the last 15 just to make things interesting.
This was the last real bike work before the race next Sunday and I'm feeling pretty confident, despite the 5,000 ft of gain on the course. Even though I don't comparably have great cycling power, I can keep a high cadence, so let's hope my choice of gearing works for this course and keeps my legs from getting thrashed.
Got home with three hungry daughters waiting for me, so I made pancakes.

Great ride! Glad no major injury from the fall; though road rash is no fun. Can't wait to hear about your race.

Ouch! Sorry about the wreck but I'm glad you could dust off and finish up the rest of your ride. That's a great pace for the distance.

I know what you mean about the aero bars...just a small movement can cause a major correction. I've run off the road a couple times just glancing over my shoulder. Glad you're all right...too close to the race to get hurt now...although no time is a good time to get hurt! Hope you tear it up in MO! You've got a great training base...now it's time to put it all together!
