Walking a mile+ at every rest stop on the way to the marathon. Walking a mile when the car broke down on the freeway on the way there. Warming up before the marathon. Walking to the car after the race. It all adds up!! :)

Sorry you didn't BQ! I know you have it in you! Look at how well you did in Boise this spring. Maybe you will have to not run a tough mountain trail race less than a month before you attempt a BQ! You are awesome!

Les, I think that was probably one of the things I did wrong in prep for this race, honestly. I had ran a 50k one month before I ran the 3:48 at Potato -- but that ultra was totally FLAT (similar to my marathon course.) So, that time it helped. This time, I ran a super tough 50k in the mountains before running a course that was very different from any I'd done before. I should have instead taken Ryan's advice to run a 20 mile run at race pace in a similar elevation-losing run. Makes sense.

Hey, sorry to read about your BQ let down, but glad to see and read your positives from it all. You will get it.... it will happen.
Funny what Les said, in that Casey and I were talking about your schedule leading up to the marathon, and thought the same thing. I wondered if the WIFKER took its toll on your quads a little plus the pounding they took in the down hill marathon.
At any rate... we all learn a little something every time we head out the door. Keep rocking it!

I have to tell you, Otto, that WIFKER was such a fun race for me this year, that I'm glad I did do it -- but as far as proper prep for this, you are all right. I'd have been better off doing a traditional lead up (building up to handling 20 miles on a similar type course (running down Bogus for instance) at race pace at least a couple times in prep. The longest road run I did in prep at race pace was 13 miles. I regret that now...
