Was super worried going into this run because my shins had been feeling pissed all day. I half expected to get a few steps down the path, then turn around in pain. But today I was hellbent on learning some tips and tricks for proper form (fore/midfoot striking, efficiency, etc.) since I have the worst running form known to man (heel striking, etc.). I flooded myself with videos and tips from Peter L. and Angela K. and put them all to the test from my first step. I could tell IMMEDIATELY the difference. It's like I was working the opposite leg muscles that I normally do. Instead of shins and hammies, it was calves and quads. I didn't even FEEL it in my shins, and for 10 miles I didn't have an ounce of pain. MIRACLE. However, less than halfway through my calves were burning like a mo-fo. They're definitely not used to being used as much. Maintaining proper form took a ridiculous amount of concentration and patience, and sometimes it felt totally awkward, but I think with plenty of practice I could get the hang. For now I'm just excited that I was able to avoid wrecking my shins today.

Now, the run: did an out-and-back on Military Ridge. Ran two miles then transitioned into (4) 60-second pickups at 5K effort with 90-seconds of rest in between each. Then ran another 4 miles before repeating the pickups again, then rounded out the run with 10 miles total. Not too shabby for a Tuesday. Rest tomorrow then another higher mileage day on Thursday.

Awesome! Yeah, you'll feel it even worse tomorrow and the next day in the calves. Foam roll the heck out of them! It takes a while for the calves to adapt to the change, but if it offloads you shins, which are your problem spot, could be a net win.

Yeah! Good job! I've terrified myself by looking at race photos from this weekend, I swear I'm heal striking in every. single. one. I need a refresher.

Thanks so much for all your help, Peter! Trying something new has sort of renewed the joy of running for a while. Gives me something different to work toward and focus on. Fingers crossed that I catch on sooner or later, and it becomes second nature rather than an awkward concentration :)

Great job on focusing on your form. 10 miles using new muscles may hurt a bit tomorrow! Hope you're rolling! Congrats on a great run today!

Fixing running form totally helped Jay P with horrible plantar issues as well...I'm glad you are getting off of your heels...keep up the good work! I'll be helping with some additional exercises to keep your lower legs feeling decent.
