John M was kind enough to offer a mobile aid station at MG and the cold Coke and Gatorade was much appreciated! Perry had stashed water about 1.5 miles away at Bryant Gap (?) so there was that to look forward to. I didn't drain all of my water during 60 to MG this time so I had some left. I was surprised by this because I thought I would need 2L + a handheld. Glad I left the extra baggage in the car!

I haven't done this part of the DRT since the DRT 50K back in November. There is a longish climb right after Wolfpen. Not steep, but long. There is another climb out of some gap that is quite tough. I started to get the "quitting" and "why don't they slow down" urges at that point.

The last major climb was up to Coosa Bald. I dread this climb but I actually made it all the way up without stopping! Amazing what peer pressure can do because if they would have stopped, I would have been happy. They didn't stop and 2 people were behind me so I pressed on. I could do it!

This part of the trail was better than the other part. Not nearly as much constant up and down but the hills that were present were tough ones. It was really, really overgrown in a lot of parts though. I was super paranoid about ticks and snakes as we ran through all that grass. Perry apparently saw a bear but I didn't see anything so that problem doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned. OMG am I really going to be running out here at night?!?

I was definitely ready to be finished when it was all over but I felt pretty good. This section measures about 7.8 miles (my watch said 6.4) and we covered that in 2:50 (that includes some brief breaks). That is better than I expected and in keeping with the pace for the first half of the hike (good!).

I recorded 2500ft of gain which looks to be fairly correct according to map info. Coosa Bald is at 4270ft and my watch read it as 3930ft so that part is a bit off. Still, if I add the gain up from a guide, I get 2230 so maybe it is about right.

Overall, a great run with great folks. I feel like I need one more long run out here to get ready for H9. I know that I have a good idea about how difficult this is really going to be so that makes me more prepared that a lot of other folks running!
