In complete contrast with last night's sad little three miler, this progressive run made me feel like I'm back on the upswing. I had an hour between meetings, and I made the most of it. Again, contrary to the nice pace, I'm still low energy and was running out of go-juice at the end. Time to start carb loading again. Splits: 8:13, 7:58, 7:52, 7:45
For those who don't mind reading a little more, here's the reason why I dropped off the face of the earth: I was sick as a dog last week. Two weeks ago my son had a terrible head and chest cold, which went through the starters on the middle school basketball team one by one. It's still going through the players. Normally before a race I get ultra-paranoid and start using hand sanitizer every five minutes, or when someone approaches within five feet, or even when the wind blows, but I was preoccupied with a job change at work and didn't even think about it.
When I woke up in the middle of the night last Saturday with a wicked sore throat, I knew I was in trouble; that's how my son's symptoms started. I started doing everything I could to prevent it from getting worse. I stopped running to let my body fight it off at 100%, I ate right, and I even went to bed early. It was all for naught- I just went into a death spiral ending in viral hell and by Friday I even "wasted" ETO on a sick day, something I despise having to do. I slept all day and that helped a lot, but it wasn't in time for the race. Friday night I was thinking about running the race anyway, but my wife put the super-ninja smackdown on me for even thinking about it. One of my lungs collapsed 14 years ago while I had bronchitis, and now if anything goes into my chest my wife watches me like a hawk to make sure I don't push myself too hard... I can't complain, since it's probably a good sign she loves me.
On the job front, I started a new global leadership role for my team, which is a good thing, but has thrown a wrench into my running routine. I'm in the process of shifting my hours to a 5:00 AM to 2:00 PM schedule so that I straddle CET time and EST time evenly. I haven't settled on a new running time yet, so my posts might be a little sporadic until I figure out a new routine. If I don't respond as much as I should for a while, I apologize in advance- I'll keep up with my DM friends when I can.
