Day 41!! Big PR today AND I WON!! Woke up this morning not really feeling all that race ready, but the hubbs and I drove over and it was nice to meet up with Aron and start talking race strategy. I lined up at the front and when the gun went off two women took off with me. Within the first mile we were already running sub 6's, I knew it was too fast so I backed off and they took off about 40 meters ahead of me. The thought of winning went out of my head and I just wanted to PR. But by mile 2 or so, the front running woman got taken over by second place and by mile 3 I caught her and passed her for second. We were running in the 6:30's in here and I felt good - humid but good. I decided to just tail her.
Right before mile 4 we hit a good overcrossing and I passed the lead chic and never looked back. I kept my pace pretty conistant through here and GU'ed at mile 5 or so. I felt strong and relaxed, even though the course was pretty boring through here. Around mile 7 though, my stomach got angry and I just lost my momentem. I felt mentally drained out there and started to loose my pace. It is so hard to be in the lead - it's mentally draining. But I still had a good 1/4 or more on the woman behind me so I kept plugging away. Around mile 8 a guy came up on me and started drafting off me. Mind you, this is a WOMAN'S race and he was tailing the lead woman. They don't say no to men, but they don't get all the schwag for winning. I let him draft off of me even though I was all over the place with my pace in here. I felt drained. By mile 9 I was or so I was DONE with him drafting off of me.
Finally I looked over my shoulder and started talking to him. I told him he was being a tool for drafting off me and asked him if he was just going to kick at the finish to get the win. He said yes and this is where I got mean. I told him he was a jerk for making me do all the work. His reply - "that's racing." True, but why don't you find your own race where you can 'race' men? By 9.5 I appologized, told him I was cranky and said go get the win. So, he took off and this is just what I needed. I finally had my rabbit. I GU'ed again at 10.5 and just held on. My final three miles were all sub 6:30 - exactly what I needed to pull me.
In the final mile we met up with all the 5K ladies, this was rough though because I was dodging walkers. I bobbed and weaved so much. In the final stretch though, everyone knew I was first and the guy didn't even matter. I flew through the final .10 and crossed the finish line first!! They didn't announce me finishing right away because they were expecting the first female to cross in another 5 mins!! I blew them away!
I know I wasn't first, but in all reality, I won the women's race and was awarded as such. It was a great race once again where I learned many aspects of racing, especially the mental part and working on my kick. I finished the race feeling awesome and so proud. It was an overcast day, a bit humid and I was a salty mess by the finish. The course, aside from a few miles of boring parts was good! I got to look accross the Bay at my beautiful San Francisco sky line!
I had about a 1:05 PR also!!! I know that I can do better - I need to find a race with some other fast women to draft and pull me.
Thanks for all the well wishes DM'ers - you all inspire me! I didn't end up changing my name over and ran as my friend. I don't feel guilty about it at all. This is a lesson to race directors: make switching over a possibility. It's 2011 - the technology is there and they know people do it anyway.
Happy Sunday peeps! Congrats to all my freind's who raced and rocked it!

Congratulations! Silly man drafting off you. And yeah, it really should be easier to change race info... like when you change races... just charge a small fee or something for their time.

Wow, amazing job! I jumped in and ran 10 miles of the race today to pace a friend, and I could have sworn I spotted you with the leaders around mile 2 while I was waiting for my friend to cruise by. I saw that guy pass too, and he looked like such a jerk out there, trying to beat the ladies with NO other men in sight. But more importantly, GREAT job on your win!!

OMG - this is so interesting! You had quite the exciting race! And I don't think you should have apologized - a guy drafting off the lead woman in a woman's race IS a tool / douchebag / a-hole / whatever. You are so amazing, Katie, so proud of you!!!

Congratulations!!! You are amazing. Please, you WON the race. The guy doesn't count A) because it is a women's race and B) he's a different sex anyhow so even if it was a co-ed race you'd still have won in my book. SO happy J didn't give you D's bib :) ha ha. And the guy was a total tool. He should have let you draft off of HIM since it was a woman's race. Or at least have taken turns. Jerk.

Great job out there yesterday. I was really shocked at how poorly organized the race was. The toilet lines were long! I rode my bike out on the course after everyone started. I saw your drafting buddy following you from about mile 7. I thought he was your running partner. I thought it was odd that you did not get a drink at the mile 8 aid station. You can follow the link to some pictures of the race. Send me a message if you want a high res picture. You may download any of them from Picasa. http

Katie, congrats on your HUGE win and amazing PR. We admire talented female athletes like you! Also, for future reference, there's no need to run under a friend's bib number. We allow registrants to transfer their entry to another runner free of charge. In fact, we did so for hundreds of women this year who called or e-mailed letting us know they were unable to run the race because of injuries, pregnancies, lack of training or scheduling conflicts. Thanks for the incredible recap! Happy trails :)
