For some reason, I was really freaked out by this last tempo run before the race. I don't know why I was so fearful and anxious going into it--almost felt the same intensity as my typical pre-race anxiety. I think I got it in my head that this was a test of my readiness and I waffled all morning about whether I'd do it on the TM at the prescribed pace (7:48) or hit the roads and go all out. I decided to do the latter, hills and all (though I do think I had more downhill than uphill overall). My pace was all over the board--from 7:15 (last mile) to 8:02 (middle mile with the steady low-grade hill). But I freakin' NAILED IT. I ran the whole thing faster than my 5 mile race last July! It wasn't easy, and I probably pushed too hard for a training run, but I don't care because when it was over I felt an amazing sense of accomplishment....strong and ready and fearless. Well, fearless for about 5 minutes. Now I'm freaking out about the actual race and how fast to go out, and whether I can maintain that pace, and how bad it's going to hurt, and yada yada yada. But the fearlessness was great while it lasted! :-)
