good Mount Baldhead Challenge 9.3 mi 01:48 11:37 pace

Beautiful weather today for this unique 15k, 48F at start and 56F at the finish. This is my 3rd Baldhead Challenge in the last 4 years. The first 3 miles are relatively flat. Around mile 2 you get a great view of Lake Michigan. About mile 3 the rolling hills begin with a couple of steep hills in mile 4. About 5.5 miles comes the 302 steps up to the top of Mount Baldhead. If you look up, it just looks never ending, a stairway to heaven. I looked up once at the bottom, and kept my head down the rest of the way up. One step at a time, refusing to let myself stop until I reached the top. Then a couple of beautiful views of the lake as you traverse the sand trail down to the beach. It was about at that point, around mile 6 that my calves started cramping up. Felt like they were about the size of a racquet ball. Had to stop and stretch a couple of times. Despite the stretching those last three miles had my calves cramping on and off through the end. Some more hills and dirt trails and back on the road for the last 2 miles. At about 1/2 mile left, 14 more steps, which is just a cruel taunt at that point. Then a final push to the finish. It is certainly a race like no other I have ever seen. And they do a great job putting it all together. Now time for some foam rolling!
