Super slow long run, tried to stay in heart rate zone 3 the entire run. I occasionally got into zone 4 on the hills and for the last 2 miles when it started to get warm.
Nice one!
1 day agoI like super slow runs! Way to go, John!
1 day agoNice run John - hard to keep the HR down with hills.
about 23 hours agoSpeedwork on Old Vineyard. 2@7:57 couldn't keep the pace on the second. Near collision with a cyclist on the sidewalk. He stayed right and I stayed left because my dog runs on the left. Not sure why he didn't try to avoid my dog and instead was clos... read more

3 days agothere's a joke about wide bicyclists in there somewhere, man.

5 days agoThe local paper said that there was a mountain lion sighting in my neighborhood yesterday morning. I ran the Ruby Hill concentric loops which circles right around where the cougar was spotted. I was hoping to see it this evening but no luck.
On the other hand, you're lucky, it didn't see you! Be careful out there!
5 days agoRemind me to tell you about the stand-off I had with a cougar while mountain biking when we meet in Seattle for RnR.
3 days agoAnd remind me NOT to go running in the woods with you! :)

5 days agoThis is my race day outfit. I don this outfit when I need a little extra kick in my stride.
I'm jealous; shorts and short sleeves, John. We'd die of exposure in these parts. LOL.
6 days agoLooks comfortable - perfect!
6 days agoI remember when that was your dailymile photo!
Note John's Asics visor! I have never seen him run without that visor on. Well, except for that night run on the Ohlone trail. No visor then.

Nice work John! Way to control that heart rate:)
about 7 hours agoA new John; being constructed a few minutes at a time.
about 7 hours agodo those zones incoporate your resting heart rate? are they based on a certain energy system you are trying to work in?
about 6 hours agoI use zones 1:50-60% of max, 2:60-70%, ... 5:90-100%max hr and estimatE max hr using 220-age.
I've read a few articles and blogs that advocate training in zone 3 or below to build endurance and train your body to metabolize fat during races.
I do speed & tempo runs at least once per week too.
Most people call z3 a recovery run. Using a hr monitor ensures that you are doing it right
