Well, not exactly the return of El Jefe (as Brendan M. referred to me in his dailymiler-of-the-week interview), felt more like El Guapo out there today. Decided to try the Jack Daniels theory of assessing injuries - if it gets better when running, keep going, if it stays the same or gets worst, well, refer to the other Jack Daniels for help (OK, I made a corollary to his theory). This was a bit between, but probably more of a steady feeling. Things got better when I focused on form. And when my hands got so painful in the frigid cold (despite the fact I was double-gloved) that they were all I could think about.
Going to continue taking things day-by-day. Would love to get some miles in the next week since they will be harder the following week, but we'll have to see.

Hope it gets better, Greg. I can easily empathize.

Man, Great or El Jefe... I really hate to read that you have having any kind of pain at all. I trust, it seems you are, listening to your body and that this gets so worse than it is. "There is a El Guapo in everyone's life"... get better my friend

Hmmm I have not read Jack Daniels book(s) I wonder about that theory like my achilles does not get any worse when running so.... Any way sill a top notch run if you ask me Greg, is that fast medium or slow for you how do you think you should run with the injury?

Well at least El Mariachi wasn't playing. Hope you heal soon.

Thanks guys - @Jason, that was slow for me, just kind of ran what I felt I could today. Maybe felt better when I picked it up a bit, but only marginally.

In this on again off again week-plus I have had with DM I did not realize you were battling an injury Greg ... since you know your body and your limits as well as anyone on here I trust you will take the appropriate measures of rest, stretches and tests before you really blast out again. Hope your recovery is short and you are back to feeling 100% soon Greg.

Hope you can run next week. It sounds like your gait isn't changing which is a good sign.

Hey man, I know injuries and how not to recover... if you need to do something cross train but lay off the running. What risk, ya know?

Looks like it was a pretty good test run Greg, considering that you could not do more than three steps a few days ago. Here's to a strong recovery!

Yeah my normal running gloves just cant cut it at the moment. I'm now wearing my skiing one by "Hestra" with some "ice Berg" liners. Glad your coming back though.

Glad you could get some miles in Greg, hope you get back to 100% soon!

Looks like you also used my dad's favorite approach to treating injuries... the ole 2x4 to the shin theory... you hit your shin with a 2x4 to take your mind off of the other injury. Glad you were able to get some miles in. Hope it improves soon.

I think Jack Daniels is full of crap on this one. That's a good way to either get hurt worse or at least prolong an injury... I think Brodie is right on this one.

Take care of the injury Greg!

real bummer on this man, sorry you're struggling. I wonder if this is possibly a piriformis issue because I had pain too in that region and once I found the stretch it loosened up and eased off the nerve. i dont know exactly where your pain is, but it might be worth checking out.

Just me, I know how frustrating it can be to be injured, but wanting so badly to get out there and run. I learned the hard why to take it slow. If you rush it, you just make things worse and it takes longer to fully heel. My sports medicine doctor gave me a good pointer. He said that if the pain is more than a four out of ten and if the injury affects my daily life (including limping) then no running. Good luck, Greg!

Precarious place to be, Greg. I think you are SO smart to go easy as this point in an injury/potential injury is pivotal in determining if it will be a mild annoyance that disappeared with rest or develop into a chronic PIA or worse, a more serious injury.
I have had numerous quirks running. Usually I back off a bit like you did and then go out and test. The test run, like you did today, is crucial for me. If the pain is worse or not improved FORCED TIME OFF. I HATE it, but I do it.

Glad that focus on form helped Greg. Good to give it a try, and glad you got somewhere...better than earlier this wk! Depends on how much the frozen paws distracted you from the "real" pain...not sure I trust the transference theory for being a real good way to recover fully El Jefe!

I am with Brodie and Chaz, although I struggle with discipline to take time off if I am not REALLY hurt. It helps me personally to focus on the bigger goals I have in spring and stuff.
Hoping very hard it gets better soon (and I really think it will from the sounds of things) and that you get a chance to rest a bit. Hugs.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I truly do appreciate it. My plan now is to test how things feel on our elliptical tonight and, if OK, simulate workouts on that using HR targets until well enough to run. If not OK, then buck up and rest, using the bike when I can manage.

And @Tim, I'm suspecting piriformis as well, need to research a bit more.

I've learned a thing or 2 about injuries, mostly from being stupid and eventually going back and doing what Chaz suggested in the first place. My current model, which seems to be the only thing that has long term benefit, is "When you feel good enough to test it, wait at least 2 more days, then re-assess." Some of the worst injuries (tendinitis in particular) actually goes "feel better" when you get warmed up, but you're still doing damage. I hope things get squared away soon!

Greg, sorry to hear about the continued pain. Glad to hear you will rest it a bit. Ellipticals ar great and will keep you fit!

Han on there Greg, I know the timing of this is uber-frustrating. Just stick with your plan (which is a good one) and you'll be back out there soon as could be.
I got a great pair of Asics Mittens that are crazy warm. I'll send you the link!

Hang in there, Greg. Not running is frustrating, but the good news is that you can keep most of your fitness by doing the right kinds of cross training.

Hope you feel better real soon. I know that this is really frustrating.

Mittens! yeah your running fitness is so strong some smart cross training while the injury heals might actually be a positive change in your training regiment.

Ugh I hurt my piriformis last year and people tell me I still run differently then pre-injury. I continued to run on it and even raced on it until I couldnt walk. Then I was off for almost 6 months. I think Brodie is right. Cross training is your friend, but even be careful on the elliptical, still works that ass ya know

I know that an injury is really hard to take. Hope you heal well! be gentle. Do think of finding a physical therapist- It could help you know what to do so really heal correctly and still stay active. I know for me a PT would have really helped me heal quicker and correctly.
