Kind of regretting not doing the Buckeye Half Marathon this weekend (but sometimes you have to give up small satisfactions in the interest of the bigger goal), so I decided to make a decent half-marathon effort today. Kept the pace in the “pay-attention-but-comfortable” range the first 7 miles (7:01-7:06), then kicked up a little bit to marathon pace for the last 6.1 (6:51-6:53, with 6:40 on mile 13). Really felt the benefit of hill and interval training on some rolling hills in miles 7-10, felt I could hold the pace well on the uphills. And yes, I am still planning to take the weekend off, since this is a stepback week. Hope you all enjoy yours.
Oh, and this is a new half-marathon PR, beats the 1:31:30 or so that I put in at the first half of the 2002 Chicago Marathon. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/46338740

Hill training has become one of my favorite workouts, but it also just makes a huge difference when race day arrives- it sounds like it has paid off for you. Enjoy the weekend off!

Nice half mary, Greg. This is just what I needed to read. I've been tossing around how I'm going to approach the Montgomery Half coming up on 10/2. Run or race? I really want to test myself at the half distance, but not suffer any setbacks in the process. I like the idea of it being a progression run. I need to practice that early-race discipline.

Amazing time Greg, you didn't even have the luxury of race volunteers or police holding back traffic. Your training is really coming along. Hope you have a great day anyday that ends in "y"

Thanks all. @Nathan, yes, yes I did do a pre St. Malachi statement run, didn't I? Next year, I'll just run the darn races. @Cynthia - yes, but I'm done for the weekend so will probably finish, like, 20th. Last week I did 68 miles and that wasn't even in my own top 10 by Sunday.

Holy Moly! You're right, you should have been racing a half this weekend!
over 1 year ago • Like
Thanks all - @Mike, if I were racing the half, I probably would have been chasing something in the 1:26 range, not what I really need to do just 27 days before Akron. Yes, I'd recover, but I still have some training goals to hit hard next week.

Wow, this is an amazing half to run at training paces! Did you know that the NYC marathon has guaranteed entries for half times? You could totally run it in your sleep! I don't even know that you'd want to run NYCM, just sayin'. Awesome run, Greg!
over 1 year ago • Like
Thanks all - @Elodie, NYC is definitely on my someday/bucket list, along with the other biggies I haven't done yet (London and Berlin, which are certainly more expensive to get to).
