tired Tough Recovery Run, almost Didn't Happen 7.55 mi 00:59 07:51 pace

Plan called for 9 miles at marathon pace, which I knew would be tough after yesterday's 20. Went out quick, but nearly gave up short of a mile knee was popping like crazy. Turned around to walk home, stretch the IT band a bit, then decided to give it another go, but as an easy, shorter run. Even that was a huge challenge; the knee generally cooperated but the legs were just dead (I think they had their minds set on giving up). Need to work on stretching out the IT band the next several days to keep the knee better. It only bothered me during a few short stretches of yesterday's run, so I know that with the right care it will be fine.
This puts me at 221 miles for July, biggest month of the year. August may be bigger yet, but that should be the last 200+ mile month. Hope everyone has a good weekend! http://connect.garmin.com/activity/42499512 and http://connect.garmin.com/activity/42499511

Thanks Brian and Jenny - I had reversed the order this week, the plan calls for the pace run first then the long run. Sometimes reversing it works fine. This time, not so much. Have a great day at BR100 Jenny!

Good run, Greg! After yesterday's fast 20 miler, I'm not surprised that today's run was a challenge. Don't beat yourself up over it! And be very careful with the knee/IT band.

That's a remarkable recovery run after your fast twenty yesterday, Greg! 221 is something else, too! Work on the stretching and take care of that knee. I like your mental toughness! Notice you still kept it under 8. Wow!

Do you generally do speedwork the day after a long run? That sounds quite brutal to me. Definitely rest and recover some. Congrats on a strong July! Looking forward to even greater things in August! Have a great weekend!

Thanks all, I've had minor IT band issues in the past but they've never been so bad as to stop me, so hoping it will be the same here (one benefit of being married to someone who minored in sports med in college). @Chandra - I do a modified Hal Higdon Advanced II program - see details here http://wp.me/pVkjc-1b

@Lam, no, generally it goes pace first then long, but I reversed it this weekend to take advantage of time I had available on Friday morning.

biggest mileage month of the year explains the dead feeling in the legs. What helps me a lot after a run is ICE. hope the knee feels better! I couldn't do that many miles a month, good job!!
