Late Sunday, I started to feel a lot of pain in my left Achilles tendon - not the one injured previously. I think I know what happened - it's not even running-related, at least directly. Too many kids were having their shoes come untied at the soccer game Sunday and, in the process of re-tying one of their shoes, I kneeled with my left foot bent under me, and I think this strained my Achilles. Parents, please double-knot your kids shoes for soccer games.
Took yesterday off, no prayer of running, couldn't even walk without a limp. Started feeling a bit better last evening, played some kickball with the boys. Slept in the night splint last night and it felt still better this morning, but not 100% and more risk than upside in running at this point, with 12 days until Towpath. So just did my long-neglected core routine and more AIS.
Have an appointment with the chiropractor in 3 hours, hopefully that will help. Feeling pretty confident I will be ready for the marathon, but would prefer to tune-up the next week plus instead of limping into it.

Oy, sorry to hear! Shoelaces of all things! Sounds like you have a smart plan... Hopefully you can get back to 100% healthy soon.

Bad timing on the strained Achilles. Yeah, no point risking further damage at this point. Hope the chiropractor visit helps!

Hate this! Hope it clears soon!

Not how you wanted to start taper, but at least this didn't happen a couple days before Towpath. Sounds like you have it progressing in the right direction, and are doing a good job being patient. Hope it bounces back quickly for you.

That stinks, Greg. I'm always amazed at how many times these kids' shoes come off at the soccer games. Hope it's just a short-term thing and the chiropractor can set you right.

Hope that it gets better soon.

Well, that's crappy. Pray you heal fast Greg. Don't want all that hard training to go to waste.
9 months ago • Like
Oh no. Hope it's actually minor and a quick heal Greg. Stupid things when we're at our most fragile hey. Damn.
9 months ago • Like
Really sorry to hear that Greg, we live in hope now, best of luck with the healing process. You will get there.
Best wishes Keith.

Oh no! Of all the ways to injure yourself. I have no doubt you will bounce back from this. Towpath is YOUR race!

Sounds like perfect timing to me, Greg. Judging from your attitude, you already know a day or two of rest is going to be more beneficial than detrimental. Hope you continue to progress.

Bugger. I have no doubt you'll make lemonade from this lemon Greg!

Yeah, exactly what Mike said. Glad you are going to the chiropractor. Still recommend that Pro Stretch contraption. Sounds silly but it really, really made a big difference almost immediately with mine. Use it now to keep it in check. Best $50 I have spent in a long time. Good luck.

ugh. Sorry to read this and I sure do hope it gets better before towpath.

You've taught me a bunch about my achilles injuries. Seems a little rest goes a long way. I'm sure you'll be fine for the race. At this point the hay is in the barn.

hmmm, reminds me of the time I sucked up a sock in my sweeper and crouched down to pull it out and reattach the belt...in doing so, I felt a "rip" in the outer ball of my foot. 3 steroid injections later, a year of limping, (it killed to walk, but was ok to run, go figure) I had surgery to remove what I called a "fireball" (neuroma---aka trapped and inflamed nerve) from between my 4th & 5th metatarsals! Moral of the story, do not do housework, it will cause lameness!

Not good news, but really hoping this is just a minor thing that will soon get better with a bit of rest. Fingers are crossed!! Stay positive, the fitness is there, just need to get this back to normal :)

Sorry to hear Greg. Good to know it's not very serious. You've done the work, take rest, and stay positive.

ughhhh this is why velcro was invented haha- no seriously though, I hope your foot heals up in time for the race, get some ice on that sucker. Hoping the chiro helps you out.

Oh man, sorry Greg! I hope it starts feeling better quickly! You are 100% ready for your marathon and maybe the extra taper will even help.

Like the astronauts did before going to the Moon, you will need to quarantine yourself for a week prior to any serious race :)

Hope you recover fast. I had a similar strain lately and had to reduce mileage for a while...best wishes

oh that suck, hoping the chiro can help speed recovery. Feel better.

Sorry to here about the Achilles. I had the same thing happen 3 or 4 weeks out from my 1st marathon(flying pig in Cincinnati) st the Athens half marathon(11 mile mark) I tried to run on it for the following 2 or 3 days and dealt messed it up. Take the time off and you'll b fine in a week probably. It sounds like an acute injury(72 hrs or less) so RICE(rest ice compression(socks or sleeves) and elevate) . Another good homeopathic treatment is Arnica gel to calm the inflammatory process down-swelling

What's left to be said... I'll just reaffirm the well wishes. You'll come through in time for a great marathon.

Greg, seems like the taper is always more complicated than it should be. As you know, this period of time there are basically zero fitness gains or losses no matter what you do. Run every day, don't run a single day .... all the work has been done. It's more rejuvenation and mental preparedness than anything. Get that achilles straightened out - sounds like just a minor nuissance strain than anything, and you'll be right as rain for Towpath. Hang tough Greg - you are beyond ready.

Oh no! I swear, these kids are the most dangerous thing to a taper... I had a kid run full force into me during my Madison marathon taper, but luckily no harm was done. Then, at my brownies meeting, two kids were hacking up their lungs, so I've been on elephant doses of vitamin c since then... Hope it's a quick heal. A little REAL rest is probably a blessing in disguise for you.

Double-knotted shoe laces are crossed for you, Greg. Hope the ART helps. Smart approach.

Heal quickly and one piece of advice: Please taper from the kickball activities too for the next 12 days.

I like to think of these things as a forced taper- sometimes it's hard to get enough of a taper going before a big race. I really hope you're feeling better quickly!!!

I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this as you're so close to your marathon - but I know you're prepared, you've handled injuries before - you know what does and does not work for you - you're going to come through this stronger and more determined to once again claim your title at the Towpath :) My prayers are with you as you deal with this frustrating turn of events...

Hope it feels better soon. My achilles was bugging me Sunday night, but fortunately it resolved pretty quickly. I hope you have the same result - stay smart and rest it as much as you need to . They hay is already in the barn.

Sorry to hear it, Greg. I'm hoping for the best outcome. You do everything right in your training. I'd hate to see a freak accident like this affect your race.

Sorry to hear about the achilles, Greg. Hope the chiro can fix you up. I'm having a few of my own nicks and problems, so I'm with you on the "late in training" hurdles and headaches.

Oh wow, this is not a good thing to happen at all. I am glad you have 12 days to get it back into shape. Hope it is just a minor strain.

You're so ready Greg. The rest from this little setback won't hurt, and hopefully the AIS and chiro will be all that's needed to get the Achilles fixed up just like new.

Arg! It's always doubly annoying when the twinge didn't come from running. I hope a little smart handling is all you'll need.
