Well, I guess it proves one of the side effects of higher mileage is that you are, again, more vulnerable to the little upsets. The bug that took 2 of my sons 24 hours to clear took me 3 times that long. Running wasn't even a consideration. In fact, I didn't think I'd be able to run today, but after gingerly stomaching an English muffin this morning, carefully downing some coffee, tentatively taking in a banana, hesitatingly downing a second cup of coffee, and more boldly taking in a fiber one bar, all seemed surprisingly OK, so out I went in the pouring rain. And now I wish I'd packed more food.
Hopefully that's the last disruption of the training season. With three weeks to peak and three weeks to taper, it's time to bear down. The upside of being sick was maybe I caught up on some sleep (30 hours in 4 days is pretty rare, plus even took an even rarer nap yesterday) and now I'm hungry to get back at things and optimize these last few weeks. But first to get the fuel and hydration back on track. Carefully, of course.

Glad you're feeling better Greg, good pace for the first anticipation back from illness. Gutsy call on that Fiber One bar!!!

You are brave to take in the fiber one bar after all that! I love them, don't get me wrong, but not BEFORE a run! Well done Greg! Hope this little bump, and much needed sleep, refreshed you for focused training!

Welcome back Greg. Was hoping to see a run from you today. Rough stuff, those GI bugs. Glad you got this one in...looks about perfect for you for a return-to-action. You'll regain stride quick this wk...the sleep inventory being replenished should really help!

All is well in my world now. The silence from you was unsettling :-) Sorry about the bug but glad it was nothing more serious. Take it easy coming back if at all possible...

Greg - you are inded right in that perfect storm of being susceptible to little bugs and being run down - I usually get mine during the taper, so you are ahead of me there. Way to rest and reload - you'll be a fire breathing dragon on race day.

My wife said I should have my head examined for running in that rain this morning. I wonder what she would have said if I had run in that rain this morning coming off of a GI bug that took 3 days to get over? I think she would have said "get in the car I am driving you to get your head examined." Nice return to the land of the living, and welcome back!

Thanks all - @Christian, you just need to let your wife experience what your mood is like when you can't run, so she comes around to saying "glad you are feeling better" like mine did.

Happy to hear Greg. I know the immune system can weaken near the peak of training. But can high running volume also work the other way? I've managed to avoid all the colds etc in our household this year (with 2 kids <5!). Maybe the increased cardiovascular work keeps the system flushed or similar?

I saw a tweet earlier that said your weekly mileage from last week. I wondered why it was so low. I love your description of all the tenderness in which you ate your food this morning. I'm with Kenny, although other parts of your body have been ravaged, maybe your legs will have a sweet perk? Good luck getting back. I'm glad you are hungry...that is definitely a good sign.
