injured Gettysburg Marathon -DNF 14 mi 02:12 09:25 pace

Long story short- the course kicked my butt today and tore up my shoulder. I was in pain from mile 5 and tried to push through but I couldn't take it after 13 miles. Went through the half in 2... read more

I kept watching for a report and then saw your Instagram so sorry your shoulder got bad again that totally sucks. You did the right thing by backing off but it doesn't make the disappointed any better. That isn't an easy marathon at all - hopefully you can run a flat fall marathon and you will be healed up and even stronger. You did the work so you know what it is all about so one more time through the cycle you should be able to break 4 hours. Like I did try to pull he positives out of this and learn

Thanks mike! It was so much more difficult than I expected. I also learned I'm not a small race person...felt like I was running by myself after the first mile and that made it even harder!

Yep small races are mentally difficult it's just you out there - I have run plenty of marathons by myself you have to play games with your brain to keep pushing through. Each one of these experiences makes us better so keep adding to your running database.

cool - follow the plan, you are going to do great. Don't over do it, in taper, nothing can be gained now but getting tired by overwork (not that you are, just some advice)

Thank you!! I really wanted to keep going today but I kept telling myself I could only do 4 miles. It's hard to not push myself right now when I feel like everything is clicking again. Hopefully this continues until race day!

April 23. Idk how I feel about it to be honest. I'm thinking more long term though and using this as a building block so it doesn't really matter to me how this race goes. I just want to run it and move on!

I've done that with the spring marathon as base building so I get it, I wouldn't bail on your goal of breaking 4. You put the work in get a race strategy and play it out in the race and learn. First marathons are all about doing it for the first time, don't sell yourself short trying to hit your goal.

Maybe...these are brand new but the same model I've been wearing for long runs. Never had an issue with them before so hopefully they just need broken in. I'll try them next week too and worse case I'll wear my old ones for the race.

way to play if smart, going an extra 4 miles isn't going to impact your training but a broken shoulder is so better to be safe than sorry. I am battling the same game of training hard but not pushing myself over the edge and being stupid. It's better to second guess yourself and be healthy than getting hurt and never forgiving yourself for being an idiot and pushing when you knew you were hurt. You are doing the right thing.
