Sadistic Hill Run 14 mi 01:56 08:17 pace

Headed out at 4:15 for the reverse of the hill run I did the other week. The reverse is actually harder because you hit the steeper parts of the hills including LeHeup Hill which is .5 miles of 7-8... read more

Wow! That hill sounds tough! You are lucky to have it nearby to train on :)

I know. It's a great route. Maybe only 2 miles of actual flat area. Just have to do it early to avoid cars.

    15K Fartlek 9.35 mi 01:09 07:20 pace

Another good workout. Hit my 15K pace easily on the accelerations. Just need to tighten up the pace. Ran 6:22 pace for the 9th mile. My hill circuit is doing its job. Legs are getting light and bou... read more

    Hill Circuit 6.39 mi 00:55 08:40 pace

Started off, stomach a little heavy, legs felt good but flat. Was going to cut it off at 45 minutes, but felt better as I went on and finished out the hour.

3 months until Spacecoast Marathon. 3 month's training down, 3 to go! 734 miles in the bank and a great summer racing season. Looking forward to more races coming up and maybe a couple more PRs.

    Tuesday 12. 12.03 mi 01:30 07:29 pace

That was either a killer run or really stupid. My brain said "Whoa", legs said "Party on, Dude"! Avg. HR 147 was only a little higher than a normal run, so that's good. Not so i... read more

    Hill Circuit 6.2 mi 00:55 08:57 pace

Awesome workout tonight. Felt stronger as I went on. Wish marathons felt like that. Felt what a sub-5:00/mile pace feels like (at least for 80m) as I ran my last one at 4:59 pace. Stride felt long ... read more

Great HR for the long run. I've never taken my HR monitor on a long run, recommend it? What should I look for with it?

I use HR for all my runs. You first need to know your resting HR which you do as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. I will keep my Garmin and HR strap by the bed so I can do it without getting up. I use lowest steady HR over a couple minutes. Then you need to know your max HR. This one is tricky. Go here to get a ball park figure. I use the 205-Age/2 (Fit) calculation. http://www.stevenscreek.com/goodies/hr.shtml

You want all of your long runs to be no more than 70% of your heart rate reserve. If your run is more intense, you get anearobic and defeat the purpose of the long run.
The best thing about tracking HR is that you can see that you are getting in better shape.
The non-scientific way to know you are running aerobically is you should feel that you can easily carry on a conversation with someone. No huffing & puffing, even up hills!
