Depending on how (dis)organized packet pickup is, sometimes people get (or intentionally grab) chips for no-show runners. Worst I experienced was a couple of years ago in JAX; they swapped my wife and my timing chips, much to the dismay of the real second place female runner, plus my father in law set a PR and won his age group even though he wasn't able to come with us to the race at all!
