injured San Francisco Marathon 26.2 mi 03:59 09:06 pace

I am actually doing this race report from the road so it'll be short, but suffice it to say, my race did not go as planned. My plan since I started training was to do the first 1/2 at 7 min miles then depending on how I felt at the 1/2, either stay at 7 per mile and get my BQ time or speed up to 6:30 per mile and shoot for coming in just under 3 hrs. It was just before the 1/2 that I got random calf cramps that got progressively worse until my legs completed seized up to the point of not being able to even walk at around mile 22. I somehow made it to a medical station at mile 24 where they administered salt water and very painful massage. I've definitely got some more to learn about race day execution I suppose and I guess I lose more salt that I thought. Sucks to be completely fine cardio and energy wise but have your legs just scream at you NOOOOOO but like I keep trying to tell myself, you win some and you lose some. And on the bright side, I still finished and if you check my race splits, I held my pace until it was just debilitating to do so. That may not be the smartest thing to admit but I draw some strength from it. Well...on to the Fresno marathon. Training begins next week. WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Chris. You'll do well in Fresno from the experience today. Like yourself, training for my next marathon (CIM, Silicon Valley or Seattle) will begin next week. Have a restful week ahead.

Isn't it such a great experience to have gone through, the whole race expo, the start, the Golden Gate... finishing?!?! It's one of the things I love about running, is the marathon race experience... I have experienced the severe leg cramps and muscles seizing up on you as well... definitely painful and no fun... and can be very discouraging when it happens during a race that seems to be going well otherwise... you will get your BQ, I'm confident of that... but also realize you set a PR today! :-)

it took me three tries before i broke three hours when i was in high school. i would be going great till the last couple miles and then get sick to my stomach and ran 301 (junior yr) and 303 (senior yr). both times i was in the 250 range with 5 or 6 miles to go. then finally just before i graduated, i ran 255 at lompoc and didnt have the stomach problems and have not had them since. of course i am really slow now.

what i love about marathons is the unknown. other shorter distances i know i will finish.

the marathon is a great adventure and i learn something new every time i do one.

btw one would think the salt issue would be taken care off with training here in bako. i do know that the cool weather hindered my fluid intake and when i finished i was super dehydrated. i just did not drink as much as when it is warm.

Great Job!! I can't imagine how you made it with the leg cramps and the hills! You should be very proud of yourself and I know you will get your BQ! I know it sucks when things don't go as planned but I am very impressed with your running :)

Just saw the video of you, crossing the finish, you were wrapped up pretty well! How are your legs today?

Surprisingly, it's just standard post long run soreness. I didn't do a recovery run but did bike commute to work. It's a bit worse in the quads but that's to be expected with all the downhill pounding. They slathered my legs in legs in that numbing cream and then wrapped em up in some blue wrap and then tape. When I got up to walk around after all the salt water all my other muscles began spasming. It was craziness but after a couple of minutes I felt good enough to jog in to the finish line.
