Maybe you should add "Don't get passed by the guy with crutches" to that one?

You're doing a half! That is awesome. Is it the obx half? I'm hoping to run that one next year.

DFL is way better than DNF (Did Not Finish). That's the real flag of shame when the results are posted! Although, personally, I think that anyone who is making the attempt is way further along than everyone back home watching sports on TV.

  4. I'm feeling discouraged. I haven't improved, in fact I think I'm worse! I don't have tons of time to run but one would think what I can squeeze in would build something. I never... read more

I find that it often takes me about 20 minutes of running before I start to feel good. And then I realize it's because I haven't warmed up. Are you warming up sufficiently?

I also found that for years I had bad form. I decided to do a little research about improving my form, and I got a book called "Unleash Your Stride." It's got some great warm up exercises in the front. It gets you thinking about your form, learning to feel what is the most efficient way to move, and I have been running way faster since I started using the methods in the book. I'm exerting the same amount of effort, but doing it more efficiently and covering more ground. And that is super encouraging!

Kelly makes some good points. There are many efficient methods out there: POSE, CHIRunning, etc... Some of the form work feels a bit unnatural at first, but quickly becomes more comfortable. Be patient and stick with it. You might want to consider trying to make 3 days a week happen consistently, you'd definitely see rapid improvement then...

Embarrassingly slow is still faster than the couch potatoes! Way faster, actually, since they aren't even moving, unless you count it when they move their arms to eat potato chips. Nice job- you're doing great.

least successful run so far...legs tired, mild concern about barfing on machine, accidentally knocked out emergency stop thingie at 14 minutes in, started over...but at least I got two damn miles in.
