My second Race Marathon and 1st in Vibrams. I was pleased with my strategy of keeping my heart rate between 155-160 bpm, maintaining a high turnover of steps and running feeling happy. Although I was overtaken by quite a few runners, I reminded myself to run my own race.
I pretty much smiled and said 'hi' and 'thanks' to everyone I saw along the route: race marshals, spectators, fellow runners and a small band of supporters. It was also great receiving encouraging comments about my Vibrams from fellow runners who ran alongside for a bit before pulling away.
My legs were pretty tired around mile 22 but then I got a second wind by drinking coke instead of water at aid stations so I managed to finish strong with a sprint across the finish line.
I was aiming for 4 hours because of the hilly trail and barefoot shoes, so was very pleased with my time even though I just missed out on a PR. Being a local race, I had the luxury of cycling the 4 miles to and from the race. I was also able to treat myself to a 2 hour restorative nap in the afternoon. My legs feel in great shape after the race with no aches or pains. Overall, I am a very very happy man.
Have a great Sunday my friends!
Mostly Cloudy. Wind: N at 9 mph. Humidity: 77%. Temp 11C/52F.

Awesome Simon!! Congratulations on the 2nd marathon and the 1st in the vibrams! That's great. So I gotta ask, where did you get the Coke to drink at the end of the race? Did you have your own personal aide or was there a store nearby? I didn't expect to read that. Enjoy the feeling of accomplishment, you did great!!

Thanks friends. I'm so pleased to report that I don't even have stiff carves... the compression socks worked a treat.

@Ben I was surprised they had coke at all the aid stations rather than the usual energy drinks. I knew I needed something more than water towards the end and was pleasantly surprised how much energised I felt.

Coke? Really? I would have thought that would make things worse. Man, Simon, what a great pace and I can't believe how easy you make it sound. I know how hard running can be. Great great great job!!!

What an amazing race you had! Look at your speed?! All those half mary's you've ran in your regular runs paid off big time. Glad you are injury free and rocking these races! Impressive, Simon!
