I have very mixed feelings right now. I'm extremely disappointed, embarrassed and annoyed with my performance today. But at the same time, I had a bomb diggity time hanging out with Norman M. and I actually finished 2nd woman and won a $75 gift card to my favorite running store (whaaaaaaaat).
I felt nauseous the second I woke up and pretty much knew it was going to be bad. The side stitch began before mile 3. It was so bad that I couldn't even walk for awhile. I just stood there, waiting for it to go away, and then started walk/jogging. I actually almost DNF'd, but right before the start of the second lap, it miraculously went away! I cautiously kept running, only for it to return again at mile 4.5, and I jogged it in the rest of the way.
In the past, I blamed side stitches on running too hard, but I didn't run hard until the last 10 seconds of the race.
But enough whining, despite the race I still had a GREAT time hanging out with Norman- this has actually become a pattern. We run a race together, he wins, and I fail. We have a deal that I will sign up for all his "A" races if he'll stay FAR AWAY from mine. lmao! It was also for a great cause, the race director was the shiz nizzle, and I am happy to report minimal pain from the shins. :D Great day!

It's a great deal!!! We get to run with each other that more often!!! I'm proud of you for pushing through the pain and the race. You're going to be just fine at the marathon, I have a feeling :)

Can't do anything about what happens on race day . ..IT IS NOT an indication of fitness level, sometimes the body says YES, a lot of the time it says NO (I know you know this). At least you still placed, and had fun hanging out, congrats Ellen!

Side stitches are the worst! Still, you finished and you did awesome. And you got a gift card! Win, win, win.

Wow! those are some crazy splits. way to hang in ther and get it done!

sorry to hear it was a hard time with the cramps. believe it or not you still ran some pretty good splits besides the difficult miles. your first mile at 7:34 is kind of hard! maybe you didnt warm up enough? gi issues can be really complicated. maybe its something you ate last night? maybe its a breathing issue? dont give up on the marathon! you'll do better than you expect

i feel your pain because ive had terrible side stitches in 4 marathons. only in #5 did they not appear. i have different theories.... the science behind it has different suggestions.. vague scientists!

I'm the same way! boo hiss!

Wait what part of that was crappy? Getting 2nd, having an 8:13 pace or hanging out with Norman? Sorry it was a struggle for you Ellen.

Pace for sure. I was expecting to be in the 7:20 range, 7:45 being pretty poor.

I wouldn't stress too much right now... you've put in solid training, and people can have tough races for so many different reasons... sounds like today was a MRP training run and you got a gift card to boot! You'll do great!

Are you familiar with Kara Goucher? She is the sister of my college soccer coach. Incredible runner, and truly inspirational. She has a blog I suggest you follow, but here's a great post from a long time ago after a performance that wasn't her best: http://karagoucher.competitor.com/2011/04/20/not-my-day-but-that%e2%80%99s-okay/ ( http://karagoucher.competitor.com/ - actual blog) Dont know if this or her blog will be helpful at all. Good luck on future races and training.

What is your marathon PR? 8:13 is like a 3:35? That is a stout goal!

Hey, don't sweat it. Seriously, it could be a virus or something! You're SO going to be great.

hanks Bri! I love Kara, I've been following her for awhile now. Aj, my marathon PR is 4:18 but that was 1.5 years ago, and I'm pretty sure I'll smoke that even if I DO get stitches during the marathon lol I was hoping for a BQ... but might have to come up with a new goal

2nd place is a pretty nice consolation prize for having an off race. I wouldn't doubt yourself on the marathon pace, you just weren't having your best day today.

Good days and bad days make up this crazy thing we call running. Tomorrow is a new day and the marathon isn't for a few more weeks. No worries, no sweat. Congrats on your award today Ellen.

I don't like that you are so down on yourself... I think you did great. You still got out there and ran, no? You are awesome, Ellen, and don't you forget it!

Sorry this was such a hard day... don't dwell, wear that beef shirt in a couple of weeks with no expectations... have fun with us, okay!

You poor thing. I know the side stitch you're talking about--debilitating! You still came away with a killer time--even with the walk break! You're so badass...don't let this get to you. Congrats on the placing!
